"In a way it's good because it controls what they wear. In another way, it's not so good because it takes away their individuality."
Donna Bovee, retired, Victoria
"I think it's a good thing. Clothes today are getting so outlandish."
Edwina Finner, retired, Victoria
"It develops a respect in kids. It helps their self-image. With standardized dress, they can all feel good about themselves, that they belong."
Paul Willis, President of A World for Children, Austin
"I'm in favor of stricter dress code. They should have taken it a step further. I really believe that it's in the best interest of everybody. It'll cut away all the gang activity."
Cris Gonzalez, semi-retired, Victoria

Maybe we can see if principle Joe Clark is available. Perhaps he could enforce a dress code policy we could all live with.
December 12, 2009 at 6:17 p.m....and speaking of 3,200 homeschoolers, Mrs. Dugger just gave birth to baby number nineteen. Now THEY have a dress code. ;)
December 11, 2009 at 10:22 p.m.I, as a student and a citizen, am very upset by the new dress code. It's not even that it's new it's just that it's stupid. In reality what shirts have logos that are smaller than one square inch? I understand the necklines and pants. Girls dont need tummies or boobs showing, and the guys don't need to be showing off their boxers. I understand that there are other ways to express individuality, but clothes are just the common way. Which brings me to these questions... Will we be able to decorate our backpacks and spirals however? What about our shoes? Are we allowed to wear as many pins/ buttons as we want? Will we be allowed to dye our hair? They said that students should find another way to express their individuality a few months ago... and all I want to know is how do they recomend we do that?
December 11, 2009 at 11:43 a.m.rebecca- u have 2-3 kids. try 3200 hs'ers. ISD's have to use FAPE. No kid left behind, etc. you can kick out or refuse kids. so you really cant compare clothing to your hs standards. impossible and not comparable. imo. lets give this a chance, u think?
December 11, 2009 at 11:24 a.m.Just had to be. Plus, our tax dollars pay for the teachers, the buildings, the administrators, the learning materials, and on and on and on. The people have spoken. WE WANT A DRESS CODE, and we got it! Standardized dress for everyone, ENJOY it Victoria, its the first time in a long time that you will actually get to see something other than Ganster clothing.
December 11, 2009 at 11:18 a.m.We have a dress code here in our school. Our only rule is: Yes. Yes to being clothed. I don't care if you dress as a power ranger, ninja turtle, INO, or a butterfly - just be clothed. I'm even for learning in jammies.
December 11, 2009 at 10:27 a.m.Good job, VISD. It is about time. Now please enforce it at every campus, without exception.
December 11, 2009 at 10:24 a.m.I think it is almost as stupid as the consolidation of VHS and SHS!
December 11, 2009 at 10:15 a.m.As for those who say they cannot afford it. Just buy 2 or 3 shirts, they will wear the same type of shirt every day, so what does it matter what the color is, they all blend in. I know, as my school district has had this dress code for 3 years. Get a couple of the school spirit shirts, they can wear them any time. And, they should already have to bottoms. It is much cheaper to have this kind of dress code, because the kids do not have to try to keep up with the "Jones".
December 11, 2009 at 9:59 a.m.GREAT JOB VISD, Schools all over the State and Nation are going to a standardized dress code.
I've been reading comments about this issue and a lot of them make me laugh. Comments where people are crying about it. They are saying things like, lets worry about acedemics not dress codes. Well crying about the dress code is not focusing on Acedemics.
It's gonna cost more and I can't afford it. Well having a family of 4 on one income I know the expense of clothing. But I also know the the big baggy clothes and colorful shirts cost more than regular jeans (that fit) and solid colored (plain) shirts. So if these items are cheaper then how is it gonna cost you more money? I've already seen the " well I'll have to buy to sets of clothes" and Why is that?
I have also seen comments about students dropping out because of this. That tells me right there the focus is not on acedmics. People like to blame the Schools for bad academics, I don't. Schools have to follow state guide lines, so how can you blame the Schools. When there are students with outstanding academic grades in VISD. So is it the School who failed, the teachers who failed, no it's not. It's the students themselves who failed and the parents who failed there children.
I wish people would stop blaming everyone else for what they do to themselves.
Once again Good Job VISD.
December 11, 2009 at 9:34 a.m.I think it's great! Should've done this a long time ago.
December 11, 2009 at 8:56 a.m.Parents took a survey and voted against a dress code. The students don't need more change at this time.
December 11, 2009 at 7:23 a.m.We need to focus on academics and not a dress code. Our district is rated unacceptable and students will have the choice to go to other high schools around the area. You may have just made their decision for them. Teenagers like to express themselves and VISD is taking that away. I think they need to look nice and I think the majority do. You are punishing the whole for a few that don't care about their education anyway. Last year only half of the students that started in 9th grade in VISD graduated with VISD. That is a bigger issue than dress code.
Familyman, you and I and all the other people that pay taxes will be buying those clothes. "Low income" people can drive a Hummer and live in government houseing but can't afford to buy their kids clothes. Go figure...
December 11, 2009 at 7:16 a.m.I think the new dress code is good for the fact that it's going to make shopping easier, but I do agree that it will take away some of the individuality of the children. I don't like the tucking the shirts in part though... So many children are over weight and that part will make the feel very uncomfortable.
December 11, 2009 at 4:54 a.m.Now I have to buy a new wardrobe for my child on a fixed income. Thank you VISD! It is as if things were not hard enough to deal with.
December 11, 2009 at 4:52 a.m.What about those that can not afford the new clothes?
