SEQUOIA NATIONAL PARK, Calif. (AP) — A California native will take over as new superintendent for Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks by early February.

Since 2003, Karen Taylor-Goodrich has served as the National Park Service's associate director for Visitor and Resource Protection in Washington.

She recently helped spearhead a new agreement for transboundary wilderness conservation between Mexico, Canada and the United States.

Taylor-Goodrich also has worked as a ranger in Australia and as a project team leader in the Maasai Mara region of Tanzania.

She is replacing Craig Axtell, who retired earlier this year.
