Lisa Cortez, current assistant principal at the Memorial High School Senior Campus, was approved to be principal of Crain Middle School in 2010-11.

Approved the MHS cheerleaders to compete in a national competition in Orlando, Fla. in February.

    2010-11 Calendar

The board approved the 2010-11 school calendar, which includes high school graduations.

The first day of school will be Aug. 23.

    Thanksgiving week holiday, Nov. 22-26.

The last day of school will be on June 2.

    Victoria East graduation June 3,

    Victoria West graduation June 4.

The band uniforms for the two new high schools were approved at the Victoria school district board meeting Thursday.

Earlier this year, Jay Lester, fine arts director, and the school district band directors drew sketches of the uniforms and submitted them to vendors to come up with samples.

"We drew designs of the hats, the uniforms and decided what we wanted to go with, using the color schemes the school board chose," Lester said.

Fruhauf Uniforms, Inc. of Witchita, Kan. offered the best overall value based on uniform construction, materials used and uniform quality, Lester said.

The board voted 5-0 to award a $227,839.92 contract to Fruhauf using federal stimulus funds for the uniforms.

According to the agenda, the 225 uniforms each for Victoria East and Victoria West high schools must be ordered as soon as possible to ensure delivery by July 1.

The new schools are set to open in August.

In other business, a hot topic of the night was the discussion on the 2010-11 standardized dress code.

The board went through the draft and discussed what should and shouldn't be included, as well as what needs more clarification.

The board adopted the standardized dress code at a special meeting on Dec. 9.

No action was taken after the discussion, which was meant to clarify the dress code rules.

Board member Bernie Klimist suggested giving students a few weeks to ease into the standardized code.

"Part of me says there needs to be a break-in period," Klimist said. "Don't go by strict liability the first day. We don't need 14,000 kids in our principals' offices."

Similar consideration should be given to students moving into the district for the first time, said board member Tami Keeling.

Two weeks to conform to the dress code should suffice, she suggested.

"Whenever we allow someone to come in, they'll need time to adjust," Keeling said. "I'd like that to be considered."

Keeling also suggested students be allowed to wear Memorial High School spirit shirts in the new high schools, since they have already been approved by the board and administration.

"We have a graphic, which is the district's graphic," she said. "Using that graphic would clearly already have met the school approval."

The board also discussed dress code exemptions, such as for medical reasons.

So far, the only exemptions include students of a religious affiliation and those involved in the Disciplinary Alternative Placement Program.

"I would suggest we put in that students get the right to apply for an exemption," Klimist said. "They may have to wear sunglasses because they had eye surgery."

Trustee Ross Mansker suggested another exemption as well.

"I think we should exempt the credit recovery program students," he said.

Klimist and Keeling agreed.

"Those students are in different circumstances, and have come back and work hard to recover their credits," Keeling said.

The board said they would continue to review and refine the dress code within the next few months.

"As we deal with this issue, it's obvious that we listen to the community," said Lou Svetlik, board president.

  • I was wondering the same thing as victorianbybirth. It says on the side bar of the story that Lisa Cortez has been appointed Crain's new Principal for 2010-2011. Where is Lisa Blundell going? Anyone know. I really liked her.

BTW: The Warriors ought to get a huge shield for their mascot and have him hold the shield in mid-air at the end of the tunnel before every game. Make it a "tradition" that every "Warrior" taking the football field on Friday night--- "TOUCH THE SHIELD" in honor of: PRIDE, PROTECTION, and POWER"

"TOUCH the shield W.H.S." lol- it holds the "POWER TO WIN AGAIN!"

And, don't be buying a cheap shield- I'm talking a true- honorary warrior shield. Fifty years from now= it will be the PRIDE of W.H.S.

  • Superdad, do you know something the rest of us don't? I thought Lisa Blundell was Crains Pricipal.

    December 18, 2009 at 6:48 p.m.
  • Political correctness run amok.

    December 18, 2009 at 6:39 p.m.
  • The high schools will look the same, colors almost the same, this called equal, no one came claim one is better then the other, the pressure is off and glad of it, as we all should be.

    December 18, 2009 at 6:23 p.m.
  • lovely--it clearly says 'VICTORIA WEST' on the sleeve of the one on the left.

Mrs. Keeling--hang tough on this dress code issue. Do not let them dilute this back down to where it was. Stand firm!

  • I think that those two uniforms that are shown are for Victoria East (if you look at the description under the picture). And I agree that 2 schools with very simalar colors was not a bright choice for VISD, but then again, when does VISD ever make good decisions?

    December 18, 2009 at 4:38 p.m.
  • On second thought, they're a little UCLA meets Michael Jackson.

    December 18, 2009 at 3:41 p.m.
  • These uniforms would work if the bands would combine and play together, but for two different schools? Not enough to tell them apart.

    December 18, 2009 at 2:53 p.m.
  • I posted my first comment about the other part of the board meeting and exceptions. Now I see these uniform pics and called my daughter over who graduated 2 years ago and was in Memorial's band all 4 years. She said and I quote " They look like something Micheal Jackson would wear'.

    December 18, 2009 at 12:50 p.m.
  • Both of these uniforms look bland, generic and boring. They both lack imagination. Our community will rue the day that school mascots, uniforms and school pride was given a back seat to political correctness. The ghost of the past will find it's way back regardless of all this effort designed toward sameness.

    December 18, 2009 at 11:30 a.m.
  • Of all the colors on earth we are still stuck with pl ain ole' red and black and now gold. How boring!!!

    December 18, 2009 at 10:53 a.m.
  • I think the uniforms are cool but to similar. They look like an away uniform and home uniform. What the heck?

    December 18, 2009 at 9:39 a.m.
  • Congrats!!!! Lisa Cortez being Crain's new Principal. Mom and Dad must be proud.

Don't worry about the band clothes they were paid for by Mr. Obama.

    December 18, 2009 at 9:02 a.m.
  • On the sleeve it reads West.

    December 18, 2009 at 6:40 a.m.
  • There is a ton of work opening two new high schools and so far it is looking good, the uniforms to me are very nice, and the schools are looking great!

    December 18, 2009 at 6:37 a.m.
  • Out of all the corps style uniforms available, this is what the fine arts director and staff come up with??? Seriously??? This board and district officials are way out of touch. These uniforms look ridiculous and as generic as the new schools will be. And what's with the VE logo? Why doesn't the West uniform have something similar?

    December 18, 2009 at 3:02 a.m.
  • What the.....??????

I thought one of the high schools (was it West) was supposed to have silver instead of gold as an accent color? What happened? These uniforms are way too similar! I don't have a dog in this hunt, but I must say that for two different schools, the idea of having colors so similar (red and black, and the accents of gold and silver don't make a whole lot of difference) is absurd! Even if these are the colors the students voted for, I am sure they were not aware at the time that the same colors would be present in both schools....I wonder how many students, given the choice, would choose another color scheme to TRULY differentiate their school so that they would not be confused with the "other one" across town?

    December 18, 2009 at 1:58 a.m.
  • No doubt! What a bunch of excuse makers, and crawfishers. What in the heck does VISD Board members not understand? You are an UNACCEPTABLE School District with LOW PERFORMERS in your high schools, and here you go, with all the EXCEPTIONS. VISD forever will be bottom of the barrell, because of nonsense like this!

And why in the heck are those band uniforms the same? I thought we had 2 different High Schools?

Oh, VISD you make this community look like the frickin laughing stock of South Texas! Way to go with your exceptions, and way to go with an absolutely awful selection of band uniforms and colors. YOU ARE RIDICULOUS!

    December 18, 2009 at 12:30 a.m.
  • Here we go with exceptions to this and that. 2 weeks to adjust? We have been given almost 8 months notice to go out and get polos. If moving to district, ok, but now the recovery people are exempt? Sorry, but if you come back to get your degree you should dress like everyone else. What else will change before this is all over? New dress code? Then lets enfoce this one 100%.
