Katie Welder, matriarch of the pioneer Victoria family, died Saturday.

Welder was well known for her work in historical preservation - including the history of the storied family she married into, and the history of Victoria.

Gary Dunnam, executive director of Victoria Preservation, Inc., knew Welder for more than 40 years and worked with her on various historical projects in Victoria.

He said Welder was a resource for historical facts about Victoria County.

"She was very involved with the history of her family and Victoria," Dunnam said. "She was a real trooper in that regard. I'm very sorry to hear that she passed away."

Dunnam said one of the most remarkable things she did in terms of preserving local history was that she and former husband Pat paid to have Roy Grimes' 1968 book, "300 Years in Victoria County," reprinted in 1985 and donated all sales and proceeds to the Victoria County Historical Commission and Victoria Preservation, Inc.

Services for Welder are pending at Rosewood Funeral Chapel.

  • Among the Welders and O’Connor’s, This lady was remarkable in away most are unable to realize, even among the clans. The subtle nature of her convictions, within determined purpose was truly advantageous to behold. Like soft white snow over a lions heart, she was both the humor and strength among the monotony of life. She was a kind lady to a young man, and inspired him to see something he thought surreal, “the man he could be”.

“History teaches us not only about where we have been, but that we can go further; through seeing how far we have gone.” - John Lara

Truly, this is a great lost to the family, my sympathies.

  • What are the odds that her true age, 97, will be given in tomorrow's obituary.
