January 2, 1909

Cal Stanton's livery stable was almost completely destroyed by fire about 2 o'clock yesterday morning. Nearly all of the contents, except some of the feed and harness, were waved. One horse was burned to death and two perhaps fatally injured. The Fire Department did remarkable good work, and saved a good portion of the building and several nearby sheds. Two firemen, Louis Schuchert and Vincent Fritz, were overcome by the heat, but were quickly revived.

January 2, 1934

One and probably two civil works projects probably will be begin in Victoria this week. The one that is sure to be started is an aerator to be built at the municipal water works plant. The other project has to do with the tiling of the Krehmeier ditch. The city will sell a portion of its street paving bonds to help finance this undertaking.

January 2, 1959

A six pound, 14 ounce baby girl, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. P.D. Brooks, already has made a "first" in her very young life. She was their first baby born New Year's Day in Victoria. According to Citizens Memorial Hospital records, she put in her appearance at 12.46 a.m. yesterday - just 46 minutes into 1959.

Arriving New Year's Day for a visit are the former Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Hill, and sons, David and Ray Bill, now of Arlington. They are house-guests of Mr. and Mrs. Winston Zirjacks.

Major and Mrs. Robert B. Woolsen and son, Edward Bruce, age 6 months, of Fayetteville N.C., are guests in the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. E. J. Dysart.

V.H. Weber, the only newcomer to a county or precinct office elected in November, was given the oath of office as county commissioner, Precinct No. 1, by County Clerk Val Huvar yesterday.

January 2, 1984

To the surprise of nobody, December proved to be the coldest December on record, Bob James, chief meteorologist of the National Weather Service at Victoria Regional Airport, said Sunday. The average monthly temperature was 46.6 degrees eclipsing the old record of 47.6 degrees which had stood since December, 1914. The figure was 9.5 degrees below average.
