SEADRIFT - A coastal town has added more eyes to watch future development.

The newly created Seadrift planning commission will swear in four of its five members at its first meeting on Jan. 8. The Seadrift city council approved its establishment in November.

"I've been brainstorming," Mayor Elmer DeForest said. "Our needs are so great, just about anything we talk about doing would be an improvement."

Creating such a commission was one of DeForest's primary goals when he took office in June. The commission would assist the city council in long-range planning relating to water works, utilities and streets.

Future developers would also go to the commission for plan reviews, he said.

While Seadrift hasn't yet seen subdivisions come into its city limits or territorial jurisdiction, DeForest expects a couple tracts of land adjacent to the city limits could have the potential for development in the future.

DeForest would like to see the city management orderly plan for the future instead of react to situations.

Planning commission members Ginger Wilson, Kathleen Lambright, Jack LaBarge and Charles Skweres have been appointed so far. The commission will consider another member at the Jan. 8 meeting.
