January- Bay City ISD Athletic Director resigns Dick Walton will have at least one more task to complete before retiring as superintendent of Bay City school district. Walton will hire an athletic director and head football coach to replace Danny Edelman. Edelman is leaving Bay City after one season to become the head football coach at Class 5A Arlington Sam Houston. Walton said Edelman, who was unavailable for comment, is leaving Bay City for family reasons. Edelman came to Bay City from Red Oak and wanted to return to the Dallas-Fort Worth area, according to Walton. “Coach Edelman is a fine man,” Walton said. “I felt like when I made the decision he was the right guy for the program.” Edelman replaced Alan Cherry in February and led Bay City to a 6-5 record last season. The Blackcats tied for second in District 24-4A with a 3-2 record and lost 28-16 to Texas City in Division II bi-district playoffs. February- Bay City Swim team take second place at regionals The Bay City High School swim team took second place at the Region IV swimming and diving championship at Katy on Saturday, Feb. 9. The Friendswood Mustangs edged the Blackcats out of first place by five points. Friendswood won the title with 105 points while Bay City took second with 100 points. Bobby Button helped lead the Blackcats to a second place finish with a gold medal performance in the 100-yard breaststroke. The Ladycats took second place with 59 points behind Friendswood who took the title with 201 points. The Ladycats won gold in the 200-yard freestyle relay with team members Kaitlin Brangan, Regan Law, Danielle Wolfe and Kara Griffith. Kaitlin Brangan was the top individual performer with a second place finish in the 50-yard freestyle. February- Ladycats basketball team crowned Area Champions The Bay City Ladycats edged the Barber Hill Lady Eagles 43-40 on Friday, Feb. 15, to claim the area championship in class 4-A. The game was played at Stafford High School.. Bay City took a 27-25 lead at the half. The Ladycats outscored the Lady Eagles by a point in the third quarter and stayed even with their opponents in the fourth quarter to pull out the win. Sophomore Devan Price led the Ladycats in scoring with 11 points, two offensive rebounds and three steals followed by Senior Nikki Mayberry with 10 points and three steals. Bay City shot 53 percent from the foul line connecting nine of 17 while Barbers Hill shot 50 percent hitting two of four foul shots, which was the difference in the game. February- Robert Blackmon named Bay City ISD new athletic director Bay City Independent School District named Robert Blackmon as the new athletic director and head football coach on Monday, Feb. 25, during a special school board meeting at the Bay City administration building. Blackmon was selected as the top choice from a group of three finalists that included Magnolia assistant athletic director Ray Kenjura and former SMU assistant Flint Risien. The board of trustee approved Blackmon unanimously during the meeting on Monday night. Blackmon graduated from Van Vleck High School in 1986. Blackmon began his coaching career at Van Vleck in 2003. March-Woods wins Texas Golden Gloves Boxing Championship Bay City and Matagorda County now has bragging rights for having another state champion in the county. Terrance Woods, 28, was crowned Texas Golden Gloves champion in the 178-pound class after defeating Kelly Buchanan in the finals at the Justin Arena in Dallas, on Saturday, March 1. Woods is a 1997 graduate of Bay City High School and his mom is Sheryl Woods from Bay City. Terrance qualified for the state meet by winning the Southeast Golden Gloves tournament championship at Houston on Saturday, Feb. 9. He won the bout with a third-round knockout over Cliff Newton from Baytown. April-Blackcats win District 24-4A track title The Bay City Blackcats track team was crowned District 24-4A champions over host Katy Seven Lakes Spartans on Saturday, April 5. Bay City won the meet with 158 points followed by Seven Lakes with 127 points. Lamar Consolidated Mustangs finished third with 126 points and El Campo Ricebirds finished sixth with 47 points. The Blackcats qualified for the regional meet at Sam Houston State University in 10 individual events and two relays on Friday, April 25 and Saturday, April 26, at Huntsville. Curtis Patterson, Kory Ford and Tommy Singletary led the Blackcats in scoring.. May-Leopards win Region IV-2A track championship The Van Vleck Leopards track team returned home with the Region IV-2A championship trophy on Saturday, April 26, at Texas State University at San Marcos. The Leopards won first place with 73 points followed by Hempstead with 56 points in second place. Weimar placed third at the meet with 50 points and Tidehaven Tigers placed 27th with four points. May-Blackcats win area baseball championship The Bay City Blackcats were crowned area champions on Saturday, May 10, as they came from behind to defeat the Barbers Hill Eagles 5-4 in game three at Manvel High School. The Blackcats rallied in the bottom of fifth inning and scored two runs to take a 5-4 lead. Hines singled with one out to start the rally and went to second base on a sacrifice by Rutherford. Benson followed with a RBI double to left field to tie the game at 4-all. The Blackcats took the lead for good on a RBI single by Leissner as the Blackcats led 5-4. Benson came in to relieve Rutherford in the sixth inning for the Blackcats retired the side in the sixth and only allowed one single in the seventh for the win. Benson led the Blackcats in hitting with a single, double and 2 RBIs followed by Hines with a single and a double. July 3- Thundering Hooves crowned National champs The Thundering Hooves competed at the United States Equestrian Drill Competition at the Texas Rose Horse Park in Tyler on Friday, June 27, and Saturday, June 28, and came away with the national title in the theme for the fifth straight year. They performed to their Las Vegas Showgirls routine, and the audience responded with applause and a standing ovation. They also competed in the Ride of Champions, which was composed of teams who had either placed first, second or third in the past years in the overall national competition. The Thundering Hooves placed reserve champions in the Ride of Champions, as they performed the Showgirls routine and also placed reserve champion in the Division 1 overall national competition in which they performed their New Orleans drill. The Thundering Hooves 2007-2008 team members are: Courtney Leissner (leader), Kalley Fikes (leader), Erron Anderson, Elizabeth Anderson, Danielle Estes, Heather Fort, Jennifer Fort, Kassi Golden, Amy Murphree, Sarah Murphree, Haylee McKissick, Chelsea Pawlosky, Veronica Plant, Hannah Vern, and Kelsey Wallis. Drillmaster is Ray Smithey and assistant drillmaster is Gary Murphree. Oct 30- Sharkettes win District volleyball title The Palacios Sharkettes won the District 29-3A championship with a perfect 10-0 record on Tuesday, Oct. 28, at Palacios. The Sharkettes polished off the Goliad Lady Tigers 25-6, 25-12 and 25-7 to claim the first district championship and perfect district record in the school’s history. Palacios finished the regular season at 30-4 and earned a first-round bye in the playoffs. “If I had one sentence to describe this team, I would have to say that they never quit and they always fight to the end,” said Palacios Sharkettes head coach James Schuetz. “This team has so many weapons and a coach may have a team like this only once in a lifetime. We had great hussle by girls on the digs and they passed the ball around very well. Every girl on the team played a part in winning our first ever district championship and that is the reason why we’re 30-4 for the season.” October-Tidehaven defeats Danbury to makes football playoffs Tidehaven’s Sean Dannels passed for 202 yards and two touchdowns as the Tidehaven Tigers notched a 33-14 win over the Danbury Panthers on Friday, Oct. 31, at El Maton. The win gave Tidehaven third place in District 29-2A and a playoff berth. Dannels has now passed for 1,809 yards, 18 touchdowns and has 14 interceptions for the season for Tidehaven. JaCorey Fisher led the Tigers in rushing with 121 yards and now has 835 yards rushing and 7 TDs for the season. “The team played focused in a very hard-hitting game, and the game ball has to go to our defense, which caused a fumble and intercepted the ball four times,” said Tidehaven Tigers head coach Shawn Woods. “Brandon Nash had a big interception to stop Danbury on fourth down to keep the Panthers from getting back in the game, and I am really proud of all our kids for stepping up to help us win this game.” November-Woods named District volleyball coach of the year Tidehaven Tigerettes head volleyball coach J.J. Woods was named Volley Coach of the Year for District 29-2A. Woods took the Tigerettes to the bi-district playoffs after an eight-year absence from the playoffs. Also honored from Tidehaven was Woods’ daughter senior Shawnette Woods who won outstanding hitter for the district.
