Sharkettes sink Lady Bobcats

The Palacios Sharkettes sank the Bloomington Lady Bobcats 55-33 on Monday, Dec. 29, to open the Palacios Holiday Basketball Tournament. Final results of the tournament weren’t available before the paper went to press. Nydia Aguirre opened the game for Bloomington with a three-point basket, but Palacios answered back with an eight-point run for an 8-3 Sharkette lead. Palacios got help in the run from Jenna Treybig, Chelsey Kubecka and Christen Sandoval. Jessana Ramirez hit a three-pointer for the Lady Bobcats to narrow the gap to 8-5, but the Sharkettes answered back with a six-point run for a 14-6 lead. Helping Palacios in the run was Treybig and Sandoval. The Sharkettes led after the first quarter, 21-10. Mariah Smith opened the second quarter scoring with a basket followed by a basket under the net by Kubecka for a 25-10 Sharkette advantage. Midway through the second quarter Kubecka reeled off six straight baskets with turn around jump shots from in front of the basket to give Palacios a 20-point advantage and a 33-13 lead. Brittany Martino followed with a steal and two easy lay ups for a 37-13 lead. Palacios led at the half 39-18. Akesia Jackson started the fourth quarter scoring for the Bobcats with a basket, but Sandoval answered right back for the Sharkettes with a basket for a 41-20 Palacios lead. The Sharkettes held a 43-24 lead at the end of the third quarter. Nydia Aguirre score two buckets for Bloomington to narrow the gap to 47-29 with 6:40 left in the fourth quarter but Palacios rallied behind Sandoval as she hit three baskets on fast breaks for a 53-29 advantage with 2:26 left in the game. Sandoval hit the final lay up of the game as Palacios polished off the Bobcats 55-33. Sandoval was the leading scorer for the Sharkettes with 19 points followed by Kubecka and Smith with 14 points each.
