Investigations are still under way regarding a New Year's Day shooting on the 3000 block of Wildwood Street.
The Victoria Police Department answered a "shots fired" call at about noon Thursday, Lt. Mike Hernandez said. Upon arriving at the scene, police found an adult male who had been shot in the leg.
Witness accounts say the victim was shot while running away from a beige Chevrolet Impala, later found parked at a home on Oaklawn Street. Witnesses wished to remain unidentified due to safety concerns.
The victim was transported to a Victoria hospital and underwent surgery, Hernandez said, although he did not know his condition.
After officers failed to make contact with residents inside the Oaklawn home, they called in SWAT team members, fearing suspects could be "hunkering down" inside the house, Hernandez said.
After an hours-long standoff - with groups of interested neighbors peering on - a Hispanic man and woman emerged from the home.
SWAT team members armed with assault rifles examined the home and garage, and a Toyota Camry and Chevrolet Impala were both towed from the scene.
As of 5 p.m., officers had not apprehended the suspect.
The police department has leads and names to work with, Hernandez said, and will continue the investigation.

It would help if the leaders of the local law enforcement agencies actually had the background to lead these fine officers - the combined years of actual law enforcement time on the job between the police chief and sheriff can be counted on one person's fingers!
January 2, 2009 at 5:11 p.m.Well I see Victoria is growing into a larger city, with all the associated garbage that goes with it. I beleave praying for people's minds is a good thing, but in this case praying for people to open their eyes would be more benificial. The longer Victoria is controled by "self serving individuals" the worse incidents like this are going to get. The people need to say enough with the childress behavior and send these people down the road. Instalation of individuals who care more about Victoria than making headlines is what is needed to help reduce the rising tide of violence, drugs, human marketing, and general lawlessness. The childish behavior between Law Enforcement and Justice Dept. has gone on too long. The price of doing illegel business in Victoria has to be so expensive as to force it else where. Victoria city and county have some of the finest officers around, but you're going to continue to loose them if you don't doo something and get people in place who will work together to work for Victoria's future, NOT theirs. Pray? YES and pray often.
