Six babies born in Victoria in 2008 share the name of their birth city. And a seventh, a close variation - Viktoria.

About 2,300 babies began their lives in Victoria last year, according to data collected by the city of Victoria. Some received names common in the Crossroads area and in the entire nation. Others were given names that are more unusual.

The most popular name for girls in Victoria was Emily, which ranked third on a list of the 10 most common names for newborns in the United States in 2008. The list was compiled by the staff of the Web site Parents.com.

For boys, the difference was the same. Jacob came in first in Victoria, but third on the national list.

Parents.com concluded Isabella and Aidan were, respectively, the top male and female names last year. Isabella was only the 10th most popular in Victoria, while Aidan didn't even make the top 10 - though another spelling of the name, Aiden, came in second.

Many names pronounced the same way appeared in various forms on Victoria's list. For example, 11 babies were named Jayden, four Jaden, four Jaiden, two Jaidyn, two Jaydon, one Jaidon and one more Jaiyden.

Parents.com attributes the popularity of Jayden, which was second on its list of male names, to "the Britney Effect." Britney Spears gave one of her son's that name.

In Victoria, many baby names also honored the celestial. One was named Heaven, two Heavenly and four Nevaeh, or heaven spelled in reverse.

Other parents stuck to more traditional names. María Quiñonez gave birth to a 7-pound son at DeTar Hospital North at 7:45 p.m. Dec. 30. The Victoria woman named her baby John Alfred.

"The reason I wanted to do that is we already have a weird last name," she said, adding, "I wanted to have a simple name that he could spell."

Easier, probably, than another name given to a baby born in Victoria last year - Octavian Augustus.

  • Cleric, I agree with your thought process, though I have never thought Madison as a stripper name. I have a stripper name, but I like it, it fits me even though I've never been a stripper. I also think Jayden is a boys name as I have a male cousin named Jayden (pre Brittney). I also don't think you should steal another family members name, unless you add Jr or your doing it as a tribute to grandma. My aunt stole a cousins 1st name & my middle name & we were both a bit peeved.

People should also consider the popularity of a name, if it's too popular & you have a common last name, odds are there are gonna be a few more of them in school with your kid. My daughter went to school with 3 Ashley Gonzales', 1 of which won Homecoming Duchess, but since they couldn't figure out which Ashley was supposed to win, all 3 got to be Homecoming Duchess. The kids knew which Ashley was supposed to win, but the administration didn't. It made the 2 that didn't really win feel bad because they knew it shouldn't have been them.

Bottom line is, name your kid something that they can grow old with gracefully, something that is unique to them, they won't be embarrassed to introduce themselves as when they are in a professional environment. They are, after all, gonna be stuck with that name for the rest of their lives.

  • momof2 - lol. I actually DID think when I commented. I googled various phrases such as "kids with stripper names", "Why do parents name their kids stripper names", etc. and the one common name on each link I clicked on was Madison. If you did the same searches you'd see that it not just MY opinion that is what that name sounds like. Besides, I have never known any strippers but there are just some names that give you a visual.

I also did not say nor imply that people think, "Hey, I am going to name my child that of a stripper." but there are just some obvious names that are related with that profession.

Much like the name "Mario" would conjure up a mental image of a certain video game character.

It's great you picked a name out that you wanted. I am sure the ones I picked out would not go over well with others which is why I said, "Yeah, I'm a bit weird but everyone has their own rules and guidelines."

    :-)

  • Cleric, when i named my beautiful little baby Madison 19 years ago, I never heard of anyone else with it, with the exception of Darryl Hannah from the movie Splash, which when I watched that movie years before she was born, vowed it was such a beautiful name, I would name a girl that if I ever had one. So PLEASE, do not link it to some strippers name. I can't help if you have heard of some stripper with the name, but it certainly was not that way when I chose it.I am sure moms out there who named their daughters the other names you refer to as well, take exception. Please think .

  • My wife and I were originally going to name our baby Logan but after going to our other children's school awards ceremonies and hearing all the Logans being called, it just seemed dumb. Not that the name itself was lame, but it was just way too common which of course I blame Marvel Comics.

When I think of a name, I think of various factors that include:

    - Does it rhyme with or can it be used as a taunt? Sure most anything can be rhymed with and kids are creative, but there are obvious names to avoid. As an example, if their last name is Hunt, you should not name them Michael.

    - Will the initials spell out / stand for something inappropriate or dumb?

    - Does the name "flow" well. As in the number of syllables mixed with the sound of their name. You don't want the name to be weird to enunciate. As an example, my name is 1-3-2 in syllables which seems to flow well. Of course I may be biased on that one. ;-) But really now, do three 3 syllable names sound good? Not to me.

    - Does the name remind you of someone you can't stand or hate?

    - The same name cannot be in my family. This is more to avoid confusion. Like I would not want to have to deal with "Cleric" and "Little Cleric" or "Baby Cleric". Sure that's not my name but you get what I am saying.

    - No adding "lyn" or "en" to otherwise normal names. Like this name for example is just "Jade" with "en" at the end. Or "Kate" + "lynn". I am just not a fan.

    - No stripper names! I will not choose my child's profession for them. You know what I'm talking about... Summer, Ginger, Dolly, Bambi, Madison, etc.

    - No unisex names. Personally I think Jayden (however spelled) is a girl's name but I have seen it used for both genders. Others like Leslie, Tracy, etc. Not they are bad names, but they are just not for me.

Yeah, I'm a bit weird but everyone has their own rules and guidelines.

  • Well workingmom, just to let you know I happen to be one of those unwed parents but that doesn't mean that my life isn't committed solely to my daughter. I am also a working mom who does all she can with what she can without her father, yes she is cute and she is a human being that is why I am here for her when he isn't. Do not down single parents it may be the best thing for that child? If you can only live the life that most of us live, maybe you wouldn't be so quick to make a comment like that.

  • I have to agree with hornedfrog! Does anyone rememebr when the Advocate wouldn't print the births of children that were born to unwed parents??? I do! It seems that more children are born to unwed parents than wed parents. It is hard enough to raise a child without the parents being committed to each other.
It is sad when these children with creative names go to school or worse for job interviews and no one can pronounce their name correctly.
Yes, babies are cute but they are human beings that grow up and have to live with what their parents thought was cute when the were born.

  • Nessa...actually that is one really pretty baby, actually.

  • What would be really cool is if the new baby, siblings, mom and dad all had the same LAST name. Naw, that's asking too much.

  • Ashley, the person naming their child Octavius Augustus was undoubtedly a fan of Roman history.
Gaius Octavius Thurinus, was adopted by his great-uncle Julius Caesar in 44 BC, and was thenceforth known as Gaius Julius Caesar Octavianus, or Ceasar Augustus. After his adoption, he became the first emperor of the Roman Empire, which he ruled alone from 27 BC until his death in AD 14.

  • Actually I am one of the parents who named their daughter Jaidyn in 2008. I actually liked the name and wanted to spell it different than the way my cousin spelled her daughters name. Her picture is actually the one on Scene on the Scene, beautiful baby, beautiful name I think.

    January 4, 2009 at 10:47 a.m.
  • At least Le-a (Ledasha) didn't make the list.

    January 4, 2009 at 6:19 a.m.
  • Seven different spellings of the same name... WOW!
I must admit though... JAIYDEN... that just shows how uneducated that parent is. These kids are going to defy the rules of learning to read by pronouncing words in an incorrect way. Has anyone else noticed this?

Parents think it's "Cool" to spell it different when all they are really doing is just going against the correct annunciation of a name!!! Geez!!!

  • Neither of the names I chose for my little girl born this year are on the list - Penelope Elizabeth. I bet she was the first Penelope born in Victoria in a while.

Kudos to María Quiñonez for giving her son a simple first name to contrast his somewhat difficult last name. I have to admit, though, Octavian Augustus is a great, strong name. It sounds like an emperor.

And really, seven different spellings of Jayden? Creative license only goes so far...
