Renovations were under way at Maggie's Restaurant & Deli at 2001 John Stockbauer Drive before it closed on Christmas Eve.

The closing came for a couple of reasons, restaurant owner Bobby Trevino said.

An ailing economy meant lower sales, he explained, and medical issues also came in to play.

Trevino's foot was amputated in late September due to diabetes and, since then, it's become difficult to move around like he used to.

"It was a lot for wife to maintain," he said, explaining they have two children in school and, in addition to running the business, she had to take care of him. "I pulled the plug. It was a painful decision."

Trevino took over the restaurant, which specialized in homestyle country cooking in October 2007 when he purchased it from then owner Maggie Phillips. Before that he ran his family's Siesta Restaurant on the Houston Highway.

The family didn't decide to close until late December, he said. They're currently working on closing the restaurant down completely and are talking to prospective buyers.

Trevino said he was grateful for the customers had while running the restaurant.

"We appreciate their kind thoughts and prayers," he said. "This has disappointed a lot of people."

He isn't sure what's in store for the future but another restaurant will likely come along eventually. Both he and his wife, Maria Trevino, have families in the restaurant industry.

"Restaurants are in our blood," he said. "I'm optimistic that whatever we do we'll do good. But you've got to take care of yourself."

No matter what happens, Trevino said, he's sure both he and his family will be just fine.

"I'm sure whatever the good Lord deals us, we'll be ready for that challenge," he said. "And we'll take it from there."

  • If you are looking for a great burger - try an old place that has been around for a while - Hungry Thirsty's - for me they are the best - I had forgotten about them and went recently and remembered how good they were and the chicken fried steaks are big and good.

  • I'd have to agree with Southtexas. The place wasn't the same after the fire, and especially under the new ownership.

  • As long as Maggie owned it it was a unique one of a kind place. The deli and ready made meals, salads, desserts by the pint or quart was awesome.

After Maggie gave it up, it was not the same....I wish we could go back to the old ways again....those yummy yeasty hot rolls, the chicken salad that was to die for. Overpriced? It was worth every penny.

  • No, not overpriced. At times yes, be sure enough it got business! It was worth your money basically!

  • "What we need is a place to sit and eat a meal, not just grab a burger and fries."

Have you been Downtown? Taqueria Victoria is awesome. Don't be fooled, It IS NOT a Taqueria. Or have you tried Rosebud?

  • It is very sad to see it close down, but honestly I saw it coming. I worked there as a waitress when Maggie was still alive[RIP]. My mom worked in the meat market. We kinda saw it coming with the changes that we knew were coming and the slow down of the customers. It's very sad to see it come down to this. But maybe one day MAGGIES MEAT MARKET will reopen as the same name in memory of Mrs. Magaret Phillips! RIP YOU WILL BE REMEMBERED!
