Industrial Lady Cobras coach Brandon Karl wanted his team to make just one stop Saturday and they didn't let him down.
Hanging on to a one-point lead with 1 minute and 42 seconds to play, Karl called a timeout and asked his team to just get one stop on defense. Coming out of the timeout the Lady Cobras (16-3) didn't fail their coach and with the help of a foul whistled on the St. Joseph Lady Flyers, Industrial managed to come away with a 40-35 victory at the St. Joseph gym.
"We didn't play well early on, but I was real proud of the girls finding a way to win even when weren't on our best game," said Karl. "I think St. Joe had something to do with that because they played defense well."
Actually, it was a struggle all day for both teams as each committed 24 turnovers on the day. But none were bigger than the two the Lady Flyers (15-8) made within seconds after the Lady Cobras finally took the lead for good at 36-35 on a put back by Taylor Milburger.
Karl called timeout after Milburger's put back and when play resumed, the Lady Flyers lost their point guard, Victoria Sanchez, when she was called for her fifth foul with 1:26 to play.
The Lady Flyers managed to get the ball back on a jump ball, but Industrial stole the inbounds pass and the Lady Cobras controlled the game from that point. Industrial would hit on four of seven free throw attempts to ice the win.
"That stop was big because right before that they (the Lady Flyers) had three offensive rebounds and got a basket so we definitely needed to get a stop," Karl said. "I was confident in our free throw shooters and felt if we got the stop they would have to start fouling us."
It was definitely a struggle in the first half as the Lady Flyers committed 10 turnovers and the Lady Cobras 16. In fact, the Lady Cobras had four less turnovers than they did shots in the first.
With the missed opportunities the Lady Flyers managed to stay in front through the first 16 minutes with an 8-5 lead at the first break and an 18-14 edge at halftime.
"I'm not unhappy with the way we played," Lady Flyers coach Carrie Myers said. "The girls hustled and worked hard the entire time we just didn't finish strong and that's something we have to do every game."
Coming out of the break the Lady Flyers nearly gave the game away with three straight turnovers that helped the Lady Cobras on a 6-0 run and a 20-18 lead.
But Sanchez, who lead the Lady Flyers with 11 points, answered with one of her two 3-pointers to half the Lady Cobras' momentum.
The Lady Flyers even managed to grab a five-point advantage in the closing seconds of the third quarter, but Industrial's Beaudoin nailed a 3-pointer at the buzzer to keep her team in the game.
"I'm just still happy to know that we can still win games when we're not shooting the ball well," Karl said.
Milburger paced the Lady Cobras with a game-high 12 points, while Beaudoin added nine and Danille Clowers seven.
