Editorial "There is considerable sickness in town and it is a good time to advocate sanitary measures. The new water system soon to be inaugurated will improve conditions to a great extent but the sewer system means more to the community than any other improvement, and citizens should hasten to take advantage of it. And, by the way, how about the proposed extension of the sewer system to the public school building? It is a crying necessity and should not be delayed any longer.

January 5, 1934

Harvey Hughes, Michigan racing pilot who visited in Victoria for a time last year, is back and will give passenger rides at the River Airport Jan. 6 and 7, in addition to staging a stunting exhibition at 1:30 each day. This time he is in a fast plane capable of attaining a speed of 160 miles per hour.

A National Junior Shakespeare Story Telling Club has been organized in Victoria under the leadership of Miss Ena Pearle Gregory, speech arts teacher in the Victoria Schools.

The increased rates being requested by Houston Natural Gas Corp. throughout its service territory got informal approval here last night when submitted to City Council.

Action on an ordinance granting the higher rates was deferred pending a conference between company lawyers, City Atty. Weldon B. Mallette and City Manager Ivan P. Oliver.

Victoria building rang up their third largest year in history during 1983, based on city building permit reports. The total was $78,713,127, down from the record 1982 figure of $90,393,408.

Ralph Wyatt remains as Calhoun County judge after a ruling by the Texas Supreme Court Wednesday. Complainant John Dodd, however, said Wednesday that he is "going to see this thing through."

The high court ruled that it does not have jurisdiction over write-in candidate Dodd's application for a writ of error contesting the results of the 19082 county judge's race.
