Breaking down the winning formula against San Antonio South San came pretty easy for Memorial's Krysta Martinez.

"We played a little defense and some of our shots went in," said Martinez following the Lady Vipers' 46-38 District 27-5A win over the Lady Bobcats on Saturday at the Memorial senior campus gym.

Simple enough for the junior whose team is now 2-2 in district play and 16-8 overall. The Lady Vipers, who took the consolation final at the Copperas Cove tournament earlier in the week, will now face their strongest opponent when they travel to face Converse Wagner on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. The Lady Thunderbirds are in the top-10 in the state and are undefeated on the season.

Memorial, which was up as much as 14 against South San, still wasn't satisfied with the way it played.

"I think we were lucky to win," Memorial head coach Sandra Jimenez said. "We didn't play our best basketball. I was glad to see our young players in there playing well, but I thought we played just good enough to win. We had the advantage athletically over them. If we would have played our game we would have won by 30."

Memorial senior Amber Flowers led the Lady Vipers with 14 points and also came down with six rebounds. Flowers shot 6 of 12 from the field in the win, but struggled at the free-throw line by hitting only two of her six attempts.

"My free throws were way off," said Flowers who could laugh about it after the win. "I went and shot some during halftime to try and get it down."

Memorial led 25-18 at halftime and took a 39-29 advantage into the fourth quarter. South San brought the game to 44-38 with the Lady Vipers using their reserves, but never led after jumping out to a 3-0 lead to start the game.

Memorial held a 14-6 offensive rebounding advantage over the Lady Bobcats, and forced South San into 19 turnovers.

"We missed a lot of first shots," Martinez said. "It was really important to get the rebounds and put it in the basket. We did a good job running transition and executing our plays to make up for our misses."

Kaelynn Reyes led Memorial with three assists and three steal, while finishing with four points. Breanna Jones finished the game with 10 points on a 4-for-4 shooting performance, while Keana Nevarez led the Memorial bench with four points.

Natasha Benevidas paced South San with 10, while Danielle Villafranca went for nine.
