The 24th Annual All Breeds Bull and Female Sale, set for 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 31, at the Cuero Livestock Commission, has drawn about 45 bulls and 350 females. The sale is sponsored by the DeWitt County Purebred Breeders Association and the DeWitt County Beef and Forage Committee.

Breeds of bulls to be offered include Angus, Charolais, Brangus, Brangus Ultra-Black, ChiAngus, RomAngus, Simmental, Grey Brahman, Limousin X Brangus, Beefmaster, SimAngus, Hereford, Gelbvieh and Polled Hereford.

The female sale will feature bred, pairs, and open heifers of F-1 Braford (many Tiger Stripes), Brahman, Brangus, Beefmaster Type, Black Baldy, Brangus Baldy, Simbrah Type and other crossbreds. Many of these heifers are 4-H/FFA commercial heifer prospects.

Bulls will sell first, followed immediately by the females. The bulls are between 15 and 48 months of age. A brucellosis test, fertility test and scrotal circumference measurement by a licensed veterinarian must be done within 30 days prior to the sale.

Females will be between 8 months and 48 months of age. All females will be brucellosis tested and palpated within 30 days prior to the sale.

Health papers on all cattle will be given to the buyers.

15th Annual South Texas Wild Hog Hunting Contest

Texas AgriLife Extension Service of DeWitt County is sponsoring the 15th Annual South Texas Wild Hog Hunting Contest on Feb. 6-8.

Divisions and entry fees are:

1. Team hunting with dogs, $100

2. Individual hunting with a gun and without dogs, $20

3. Individual trapping hogs, $20

4. Individual hunting with a bow and without dogs, $20.

Cash prizes will be awarded to the top 10 places in the dog divisions and the top three places in the gun and trapping divisions. Places 11th through 20th in the dog division will receive prizes donated from local businesses.

Contestants in the trapping division will be able to sell their live hogs at weigh-in.

There are also three cash jackpots that contestants can enter at $10 per entry:

1. Winner-takes-all for heaviest dressed hog for dog teams and individual hunters

2. Winner-takes-all for heaviest live hog for trappers only; and

3. Winner-takes-all for total head count for dog teams only.

All contestants, or their representative, must be present on Friday, Feb. 6 from 5 to 6 p.m. at the Friar Ag Center in Cuero for registration. There will be no pre-registration.

The contest is open to wild (feral) hogs hunted or trapped in any county in Texas and only during the period from 6 p.m. Feb. 6 through noon Feb. 8. Hogs cannot have been previously trapped, kept, or held for the contest.

Contest weigh-in times will be noon to 2 p.m. Saturday and 8 a.m. to noon Sunday. Hogs must be brought to the Friar Ag Center in Cuero no later than noon on Sunday, Feb. 8, to be eligible for competition.
