In Hebrews, Chapter 13, we are instructed, "Be not forgetful to entertain strangers, for thereby some have enertained angels unawares."
As the new year dawns, it's almost certain that people like Trent Peterek, Mike Johnston and a host of other donors have had a good chance in the past week or so of unknowingly entertaining some angels.
Fire tragically has struck three families in their Victoria-area homes since Christmas Eve, but thanks to the aforementioned folks and their generosity, they will have new homes.
Peterek, who owns a house-moving company, and Johnston, who runs a brush removal company, knew what they had to do, and they did it.
"These people need help," Johnston told Advocate reporter Leslie Wilber. "I'm just blessed I could help these people."
Peterek already has donated new homes to be moved onto the burned lots that Johnston is clearing. And literally hundreds of people have contacted the Crossroads Chapter of the American Red Cross to offer financial help for the fire victims.
Both men say that it was their faith in God that inspired them to come to the aid of these families.
And, as if to assure the men that they had done the right thing, they found a pendant in the ashes of Cisneros' home, imprinted with Psalm 91:11. It read, "For he shall give his angels charge over thee to keep thee in all thy ways."
The message is there for all of us. Helping others takes your time and effort - and perhaps some of your money - but we should all seek out opportunities to do so.
Let's not just read about the good deeds of others.
Why not we go out into this new year and entertain a few angels of our own.
