Editor, the Advocate:
The government tells us that at the age of 18 we can enlist in the military, be trained for combat, fight in a war and die in that war without ever seeing our 19th birthday.
The system tells us at age 16 we are allowed to drive a car, seek employment and hold a part-time job. The education system tells us that at age 18 we are allowed to graduate high school, move out of our parents' house and live on our own.
Before we turn 21, we are allowed to take on all these difficult responsibilities. And even at 18 we have the power to vote on who will be the next president. But we're not allowed to have a beer at a bar, and drink with a couple of friends on any given night, which is ridiculous because that might be the last time we ever see each other before we go to college and start a new chapter in our lives. So why is this decision to lower the drinking age to 18 so hard to figure out?

Thanks you, wayward.
January 8, 2009 at 10:16 a.m.Thank you, Bundy. Your post, especially the last sentence, is the definitive answer to this question.
January 7, 2009 at 3:40 p.m.It is so wonderful when the young people go back to school after Christmas. All these deep, well thought out letters imploring society to change to suit young people.
January 7, 2009 at 3:29 p.m.Americans are so backward when it comes to dealing with perceived societal problems. Most Americans think they exist in a vacuum. They never want to look at history. They never want to look around them at what is working elsewhere.
January 7, 2009 at 8:59 a.m.Look at the northern European countries that have very liberal pornography laws - they have virtually no rape. Look at Switzerland (where every home MUST contain a gun) - they have a very low murder rate. Look at countries with low or no drinking ages - they have far lower rates of abuse, and subsequent breaking of laws (DWI).
Most people here seem to be mortified by drugs. Have any of you been to Amsterdam? Last I heard, they have less hobos than any major city in the US.
Americans need to cure themselves of this narcissism that compels them to believe they can change everything in life by making a law.
I'm kinda in the middle of the road on this one. I do feel if you are old enough to serve your country, you should be able to drink. On the other hand, the majority of 18 - 21 yr olds simply can't handle their booze. They usually drink up like there is no tomorrow. In Germany, you can only drink beer until your 18. You have to be 16 to buy beer, and it has to be the mixed kind (beer and coke, beer and lemon juice, etc.). If you are at a club, they will announce at midnight that under 18 yr olds must leave (curfew), and believe it or not the kids listen and line up to leave (most anyways). Germany also has fantastic public transportation with trains, buses, walkways, and taxis. You can't drive in Germany until your 18 (then 2 yrs probation), so this keeps the DUIs down quite a bit. I know there are a lot of young adults that know how to enjoy a drink or two, but what I have seen is that the majority binge drink, and then end up in some kind of trouble.
January 7, 2009 at 4:12 a.m.In Germany, there is no drinking age....so drinking isn't a big deal.
January 7, 2009 at 2 a.m.good point ninjas, all service members should be able to drink at 18
January 6, 2009 at 6:19 p.m.should be lowered to 18. if u can die for this country at 18 then why not drink.
January 6, 2009 at 5:39 p.m.Who is gonna support these kids until they are 21? Many would be unable to attend college as they have to work to help pay for their expenses.
January 6, 2009 at 7:52 a.m.You left having babies off your list. There should be a law addressing that.
To get married-21 years old
January 6, 2009 at 7:39 a.m.To drive-21 years old
To join the service-21 years old
To drink-21 years old
To get a job-21 years old
Hey why not, no one likes the law anyhow. Just make it more harder on them.
At 18 most young men and woman party far too hard. And a lot die from drinking. They poison their systems, just to prove they can out drink someone else. That is not mature at all. That is not an adult thought. You need to understand that laws are made for reason's. And usually it's the bad apple that spoiled it for everyone else.
Beach parties that they have on spring break proves how bad the teens act. So law is law, just live with it.
And maybe you will understand one day.
You don't have to marry at the age required, or drive at the age reqired, or do anything at the age reqired. But, if you just wait to grow up, maybe life would be better. To many are in a hurry to grow up. And when they have done it all, they then wonder, well was this what I waited for?
My Thoughts
I agree it is a bit silly. Instead of lowering the drinking age though, I would rather raise the ages for everything else.
