The first section of the homeseekers' excursion arrived here last night and the city is therefore crowded with visitors. Many have expressed themselves delighted with Victoria and intend to locate here.

January 8, 1934

The city met with an unexpected expense today when it was discovered that three blocks of the storm sewer on Moody Street, laid many years ago, had collapsed. Only recently two blocks of the same sewer was replaced for the same reason.

Count Relief Administrator Leander B. Wilden stated this afternoon that he had received no notice of what Victoria County's share will be of the first state relief funds. Local relief work is still being carried on with federal money, of which there is about $900 left.

January 8, 1959

Salaries of three top officials and the athletic director were raised yesterday by trustees of Victoria Independent School District. Gordon Wood, coach; George Lipscomb, high school principal; Roy E. Greenwood, business manager and Fred Sandhop, tax assessor-collector, were granted $500 a year increases "beginning with the next contract period." Contracts usually are renewed in the spring. Wood now will draw $8,800 a year plus $600 a year expense account; Lipscomb will receive $9,600 annually; Greenwood's salary will move a $10,000 a year; and Sandhop will go from $5,800 to $6,300.

Federal judges in the Southern District of Texas carry a heavier caseload than the national average, and the district has the nation's highest criminal case filings. Those facts, says Southern District chief clerk Jesse E. Clark in Houston, are statistics which "tend to justify or not justify another judge" when Congress assesses the problems of the federal judiciary.

Pam Hickey, 16-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William "Butch" Hickey from Yoakum, is the first to enter the 1984 Six flags Trail Ride Queen Contest. The annual trek from Victoria to San Antonio will be held Feb. 3-10.
