Once again, Victoria County has implemented a burn ban, as dry, windy conditions and a lack of rain have combined to increase the number of fires.
County Fire Marshal Ronald Pray told the commissioners court Monday, "Over the last week, we've had a major increase in the (fire) call volume," and then recommended the ban be instituted. Commissioners quickly agreed.
We strongly agree with the ban being put in place, thus controlling all outdoor burning.
Pray indicated the fires over the past week were due to fireworks, controlled burns and outdoor burning of trash.
County Judge Don Pozzi put it succinctly: "I think it has become obvious we are left with very little choice. It is awfully dry out there."
The threat of fire is twofold: There is the danger of carelessness or lack of precautions causing fires, and there is the danger of county residents ignoring the ban put in place on Monday.
We must remember that one playful firecracker, one barrel of trash being burned without a cover, or one controlled field burn can become a tragedy that ruins people's lives.
The minuscule amount of rainfall recorded recently is quickly dried out by the arid north winds at this time of year, and the dry ground conditions that quickly soak up any moisture.
We therefore urge all county residents to take very seriously the imposition of this ban on outdoor burning, and take the steps necessary to curtail the outbreak of wildfires.
The steps you should take are the same as you would want your neighbor to take - especially if you live downwind from him.

Tips when burn bans are lifted
Residents are encouraged to avoid any burning on windy days or near any wooded areas.
Burn only small amounts at at time and have a garden hose, metal rake and shovel nearby to control the fire.
Everyone is reminded they can be potentially held liable for the costs of damages and extinguishing out-of-control fires.
