The Matagorda County Commissioners Court approved the hiring of Frank Craft as a Lt. Narcotics officer under Sheriff Gary Mathis during a meeting they held immediately following the elected officials’ swearing in on Jan. 1. During that meeting, the court also hired Eva Lopez as Administrative Secretary, Richard Rooth as Captain, and Doug Pruitt as Investigator CID. It was Craft’s acceptance of this new narcotics officer job that led the court to approve Pete Hale, Glen Davis and Ken Savage as Precinct 2 Deputy Constables under Craft during its regular meeting on Monday morning. Commissioner for that precinct, George Deshotels, said, “Craft called me and said, because he has taken this new job, he needs all the help he can get down in Precinct 2.” Deshotels went on later in the meeting to congratulate the group and say that he thinks the county has a great group together in the government offices. Matagorda County Judge Nate McDonald also congratulated Mike O’Day, Texas state representative, for the last two years of his service for the state and county. O’Day was present at the Monday meeting for what he called one of his last official things to do before his position expires in a few weeks. “I wanted to come and thank the court for all that you did and for the guidance that you give the community,” he said. “I want you to know what an honor it was to represent you because, like I’ve said a hundred times, I have a motto that says the best team wins. I know you put the best team together here and we got everything done we wanted to do.” O’Day said he had learned a lot during the last session and offered that knowledge to the court anytime they may need it in the future. “Anytime you have a question as to how something happens or need advice for any kind of a strategic move, I want you to know that myself and my staff are still here to help you,” he said. “I want to remind you what a gem we have here in Matagorda County. There is no place in this state that is better than this county. We have natural resources, we have the water, beaches, oil, gas reserves, crops and we’ve got good people.” He urged the commissioners to continue to be good stewards, as they have before, and to make sure that the decisions they make are best for Matagorda County in the long-term. McDonald then thanked him for his service by saying that what O’Day was able to accomplish was not typical of first-time representatives. “I want to thank you publicly. You were a rookie who hit the ground running and didn’t stop. We very much appreciated that. We thank you very much for what you have done and what you will do. It’s nice to have officials keep their campaign promises and you did that,” he told O’Day. In other business, the court decided to: Increase the Law Library Fund for Probate and Civil cases fee from $20 to $35. Approve annual, quarterly and monthly automatic payments. Award bids for road material, construction, equipment and operation and authorize McDonald to sign the contracts for them. Approve the consultant flood mitigation plan contract between Matagorda County and Halff Associates, Inc. Appoint Commissioner James Gibson as the chairperson on the Matagorda County Sick Leave Bank and Commissioner David Woodson as Judge Pro-Tem for 2009 Court meetings. Agree to extend open enrollment for new cancer policy upgrades from Aflac for all county employees.
