Almost three months after being caught under an 18-wheeler during an off-duty traffic job in Brazoria County, Bay City Police Officer Mike Jarmin is making what his family is calling huge steps toward an amazing recovery. “We have just been amazed at his recovery,” Jarmin’s wife, Sandra, said. “What he has done in two months is what usually takes people six months to accomplish. He has been coming along really fast.” Jarmin was working a security job on a Brazoria County highway on Sept. 3, when a tractor-trailer failed to stop and slammed into a vehicle before rolling over on top of Jarmin. He was transported to Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston, were he remained in critical condition. “We know he probably shouldn’t be alive, and feel lucky that he’s here. The progress he has made has been phenomenal,” she said. “The doctors have him up and moving on a daily basis and he is already independent in his wheelchair.” In an effort to help the Jarmin family with the large amount of unexpected expenses in the past three months, the Bay City Police Department organized a barbecue fundraiser on Oct. 3 The event allowed for Police Chief Roger Barker to present Sandra with a check for $39,119.17 on Wednesday, Nov. 26, to go toward medical expenses and other bills. “It’s the kind of thing you see in movies,” she said with tears in her eyes. “I saw the whole community come together in support of us and it was beautiful. Everyone has been there for us; even people I didn’t know were sending letters and showing their support. I just want to say thank you to everybody for helping us out so much during this time.”
