CUERO - DeWitt County taxpayers are reminded that Monday, Feb. 2, is the deadline for qualified candidates to make their first quarterly tax payment.

This quarterly payment program is for homesteads with an over-65 or disabled exemption. Taxpayers are also reminded that penalty and interest of 7 percent begins on Feb. 1 and increases 2 percent each month until June. Penalty and interest in June is 15 percent and on July 1 goes to 42.5 percent.

Taxpayers should pay the amount due on their tax bills next to the month the payment is being made.

The DeWitt County Tax Office accepts partial payments on both current year and back taxes. If back taxes are owed, a contract can be signed for 36 months to pay off the delinquent taxes.

Tax information is available and payments can be made on the Internet at www.co.dewitt.tx.us. Click on county offices, then tax assessor-collector. Online payments go through a third-party vendor and there is a convenience fee.

Payments can also be made in person at the tax office in the county annex building, 114 N. Gonzales St., from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. The lobby is closed from noon-1 p.m., but the drive-through window is open from 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m., including during the lunch hour.

For more information, call 361-275-0879.
