Kerrie Carter is an accomplished basketball player, but the Cuero native still has goals remaining.
"I really want to make the playoffs," Carter said. "I haven't made them since I came to college, so that's something I want to accomplish."
Carter, a senior at Concordia, has that opportunity this year as the Tornadoes look poised to make a run to the postseason.
Carter is averaging 11 points per game and is pulling down 6.6 rebounds. She also leads the team with 34 made free throws and was selected as one of four captains on the Concordia squad. She started her college years in Kerrville at Schriener University, but says the transfer to Austin has worked out the way she wanted it to.
"We are playing really well and are second in our division," Carter said. "We just played a good game against Texas State and I was able to get a double-double in the game. I think it's an accomplishment to play like that and I think we are continuing to get better."
The Tornadoes are 4-4 on the season, including dropping a 68-58 overtime game at Texas State. Concordia is coming off a 70-66 win over Mary Hardin-Baylor and plays Thursday at Mississippi College.
Carter, who a Kinesiology major, is planning on getting her master's degree from Texas State after graduation and wants to become a coach.
But before her future arrives, Carter is focused on making her final days and games at Concordia be the best they can be.
"I'm just trying to help my team out and be a positive captain," Carter said. "I'm looking to make it to the playoffs because Concordia hasn't done that in a while. It's looking pretty good so far, we just have to keep playing the way we have been. I'm really excited about where we're going."
Senior Blake Burton (Boling) was one of four Texas State players named to the Capital One/Southland Conference All-Academic Football Team. This was the second time Burton has been selected to the team.
Burton was a first-team all-Soutland Conference selection at fullback after playing in 13 games and starting seven. Burton was used primarily as a blocker and had a career-high 25 carries for 64 yards and four touchdowns.
Burton was named to the Dean's list five times during his first three years at Texas State and named to the Southland Conference Commissioner's Honor Roll from 2004-07 and the all-academic team in 2006.
TCU center Blake Schlueter (Ganado) will play in the Texas vs. the Nation All-Star challenge in El Paso on Jan. 31.
Schlueter was a three-time All-Mountain West Conference performer. The senior anchored a TCU offensive line which paved the way for the Frogs to set single-season school records in 2008 with 56 touchdowns and 437 points scored.
A preseason All-American, Schlueter was on the watch list for the Rimington Trophy and Rotary Lombardi Award.
Schlueter holds the TCU weight room record with a squat of 870 pounds.
Former TCU safety and return specialist Brian Bonner (Beeville) played in last year's Texas vs. the Nation All-Star Challenge and eventually signed a free-agent contract with the San Diego Chargers.
Henderson State wild receiver Garett Manning (Hallettsville) will play in the Valero Cactus Bowl on Friday at Javelina Stadium on the campus of Texas A&M-Kingsville.
Baylor's Jhasmine Player (Bay City) scored 10 points, grabbed eight rebounds and had six assists and six steals in a win over Texas State.
Arkansas Tech's Brandon Friedel (Memorial) finished with 13 points, eight assists, four steals and a rebound in a win over Plilander State and a loss to North Alabama.
Texas A&M-Kingsville's Adam Morris (Goliad) had five rebounds, two points and two steals in a loss to Central Oklahoma.
