Coming off a 10-9 season and an exit in the first round of the playoffs, the Memorial Lady Vipers soccer team is elevating their expectations this season.

"I'm really wanting to go big this year and win a district championship and go deep in the playoffs," said Memorial goalkeeper Korey Schroeder whose Lady Vipers open their season at 11:45 a.m. Friday at Memorial Stadium against Corpus Christi Moody at the VISD Crossroads Tournament. "Our goal is to go undefeated, and it starts with our tournament. We want to come in a play our best every game and come out with a tournament championship."

Boerne won the VISD Crossroads tournament last year, but is not in the field. St. Joseph opens at 11:45 a.m. against Bay City on the MHS practice field, while last year's runner-up Flour Bluff plays Seguin at 11:45 a.m. at Patti Welder Stadium.

Schroeder is one of nine Lady Vipers returning for their senior season. The senior goalie has already signed to play college soccer at West Texas A&M and brings experience and confidence to every game.

"The girls all feel really comfortable with Korey back there in goal," Memorial second-year head coach Denys McCarter said. "She just knows what to expect and does a great job for us. Being a four-year starter, you only expect the best out of her."

Along with Schroeder, the Lady Vipers look to be in good shape throughout the field.

Jazlyn Payne, Tiffany Sublett and Jade Payne are all seniors coming off first-team District 27-5A selections, while Taylor Blackman, Tabby Zella and Alex Kulousek were on the second team.

Add in Jessica Mickey who was the district's newcomer of the year and expectations are sky high.

"Winning district is expected," McCarter said. "We have nine seniors with a lot of experience. All the starters are back, so we are expecting to move forward with no steps back this year.

"We have seen huge improvements in Tabby's footwork and her ability to move the ball around. Mickey's goal is to be more aggressive this year and follow up on shots. With them growing with more experience we are looking for big things from both of them."

For McCarter, the Crossroads tournament is a great opportunity to get the team back in game action and play against strong competition.

"We've had scrimmages but this tournament is a great way to see where we are at," McCarter said. "It's all for keeps now, and I'm excited to see what we're going to be able to do."
