SPRING BRANCH - The Memorial Vipers ended last season with a shootout loss, but started this year with a shootout win.
Memorial and San Antonio Southwest went to the eighth shooter in the first round of Smithson Valley's Comal Cup with the Vipers coming away with a win as David Bernard made the final kick.
"We missed some easy chances early. We could have won in regulation," Memorial head coach Tim Eaton said, "but it was good to come back and win it. They finished the game well."
The Vipers (1-0) return to tournament action at 5 p.m. on Friday against New Braunsfels Canyon.
Luke Tibbetts scored Memorial's lone regulation goal with a strike in the 30th minute of the first half. The Dragons tied the game with five minutes left, but with Michael Rojas in goal in the shootout the Vipers were able to come out with the win.
