Q: Please give a brief history of the church.
A: Holy Family Catholic Church began in 1981. The decision to form the new church came after leaders recognized that growth in the northern part of Victoria created a need for a new Catholic church in the area. Two hundred families from Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church were asked to begin the new church. The church now has a membership of 1,500 families.
For the first three years, services were held at Colonial Funeral Home North. In the meantime, plans were made for a new church building, which was finished in 1984. A Religious Education Center was added in 1994, and an Activity Center in 2001. Over time, many ministries have been developed, all with the goal of meeting the needs of the faith community served by the church.
Q: What activities do you have through the week?
A: Weekly activities include: religious education for youth and adult, visiting the homebound and infirmed, grief support group, singles groups, mother/child support group, youth activities, young adult and college campus ministry, ACTS retreat ministry, music ministry, various parish organization meetings and functions, Eucharistic adoration, rosary recitation, RCIA classes, and Christian counseling
Q: Are you working on any projects? If so, describe them.
A: The church is participating in a coat and blanket drive.
As the Lenten season approaches, the Disciples on the Journey program we do each year is getting started.
The church is planning its celebration of wedding anniversaries in conjunction with World Marriage Day.
Q: How are you involved with the community?
A: The church financially supports VCAM and Perpetual Help Home, and does an annual food drive for VCAM.
The church has sponsored and built a Habitat for Humanity home.
The church provides a meeting space for Alcoholics Anonymous and Alanon.
Numerous church members are volunteers at Hospice of South Texas, Habitat for Humanity, VCAM, Christ's Kitchen, Citizens Medical Center, DeTar Hospital, and the Riding Therapy Center. We also have people involved in ministry at the Victoria County Jail.
Q: If I'm new to the community, what sets your church apart from others in the area?
A: Holy Family is a vibrant, active church. Understanding that we have a mission to fulfill, church members are willing to be involved both in their church and in the community of Victoria. A generous spirit prevails.
