Holland in explaining the proposal to construct a drawbridge across the Guadalupe River: The United States Government appropriated funds to deepen the Guadalupe River to Victoria, with the idea of giving this city the full benefit of navigation. The question was early approached as to how far up the river would be made navigable, and our citizens' committee, in conference with Major Edgar Jadwin, decided that we should have navigation as high as the waterworks pumping station. However, the provisions of the bill cannot be carried out unless the river is deepened to Victoria which will in itself make it necessary to put in a drawbridge.
