Australian shepherds have short teeth, dropping ears and no tails, Tiffany Foote said.
The senior at Memorial High School - Senior Campus in Victoria spent time observing her grandfather's Australian shepherd, Rita, while working on a submission for Victoria Independent School District's Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo art show.
"Wow, I really didn't look at this dog before," she remembered thinking.
Her painting, which depicts an old man sitting on a porch with two Australian shepherds, was judged and exhibited Saturday morning in the art show at Vickers Elementary in Victoria. It won a gold medal prize in the high school division.
A team of judges from Houston also awarded several other students: Virginia Tijerina, best in show, Danielle Donovan, a gold medal, and Corina Gomez, Jade Hoffman and Sunny Monroe, special merit, for the high school division; Alexis Lopez, best in show, and Benjamin Fogal, a gold medal for the junior high school division; and Hailey Dilworth, best in show, and John Davila, a gold medal for the elementary school division.
All winners are invited to a statewide award ceremony in Houston on March 7. At the ceremony, judges select 50 pieces for auction.
The auction money, which totaled more than $1.6 million in 2008, goes to college scholarships.
Last year, Foote's submission received the best of show prize in the high school division and was auctioned for $40,000 in Houston. She took home $6,000 of this money to pay for college. She wants to study animals.
"I like them more than most people," she said, laughing.
The VISD show had 294 entries this year, said Nadine Pabst, assistant principal at Vickers and the art show's coordinator since 1998.
Pabst thinks the program is wonderful because it excites and motivates students in Victoria.
"I think our job as educators is to keep kids hooked in school and do whatever we can for the children," she said.
