Amy Torres was all smiles when she ran over to tell her family that she had scored 20 points.

She'll be even happier to find out that she actually scored 22.

Torres, who scored 17 of those points in the first half, helped lead the Memorial Lady Vipers to a 67-59 District 27-5A win over San Antonio Highlands on Friday at the MHS senior campus gym.

"I've been working extra hard at 3-pointers at practice and staying late to work on my game," Torres said. "Kaelynn (Reyes) is helping me get them down, and it's paying off. I came out strong in the first half and was feeling good."

Torres and the Lady Vipers came out fast and went into halftime with a 37-28 advantage. Torres went 6 of 7 shooting in the first half from the field before cooling off by missing all eight of her shots in the second half.

Still, the junior will take her 22 points and her team's third district win of the season.

"It was all teamwork," said Torres who also finished with 12 rebounds. "We worked really hard on offense and defense we never gave up. We never gave up even when our shots weren't falling."

Memorial is off until next Friday because of school testing and will travel to Corpus Christi to play King.

Against the Lady Owls, Memorial never trailed and were never really threatened.

The Lady Vipers (17-9, 3-3) made 21 free throws in the game and hit three 3-pointers.

"The girls came out with confidence," Memorial head coach Sandra Jimenez said. "Any time you come out that way you're giving yourself a chance to play well. The crowd got into it and we have been working hard to get to this point."

Krysta Martinez added 16 points in the win, while Ebony Murphy scored 10 off the bench. Martinez struggled from the field shooting 5-for-17, but made up for it with nine rebounds.

Jessica Iwabuschi led Highlands with 19, while Nasha Clayton contributed 10.
