Perfection is rarely accomplished in sports, but the Memorial Lady Vipers almost accomplished it Friday on the first day of the VISD Crossroads Soccer Tournament.

Memorial won both of its games by a combined score of 9-0 and put 68 more shots on goal than its opponents.

"It was a great accomplishment and boosts our confidence," said Memorial senior Tiffany Sublett. "It was a great start to a season we've all been looking forward to. It was a great day."

The Lady Vipers (2-0) started the season with a 3-0 win over Corpus Christi Moody and followed with a 6-0 victory over Lockhart. Memorial's defense didn't allow Moody to get a shot on Karria Brown in goal, while its offense put 42 shots on the Lady Trojan's goalkeeper.

Memorial plays Corpus Christi Flour Bluff at 10:45 a.m. Saturday at Memorial Stadium. flour Bluff advanced with a 2-0 win over St. Joseph.

The winner advances to the championship at 3 p.m.

Tabby Zella scored the Lady Vipers first goal of the year off a corner kick, while Sublett followed to put Memorial up 2-0 at halftime against Moody. Memorial scored its final goal of the game as starting goalie Korey Schroeder notched a goal in the waning moments of the game.

The Lady Vipers dominated their game against Lockhart from the start of the game and went into the break with a 5-0 advantage.

Taylor Blackman scored six minutes into the contest, while Jade Payne and Jazlyn Payne scored goals with a minute of each other to take the score to 3-0.

Sophomore Jessica Mickey joined in on the fun with a goal off a deflection in the 35th minute before Nereyda Martinez capped the scoring frenzy with an unassisted goal two minutes later.

"We did a great job of passing and getting through the defenses," Mickey said. "We did a great job of working as a team. We don't usually have that many shots on goal, but it's nice when you do."

Mickey, who led Memorial in scoring last year as a freshman, added her second goal of the season with the Lady Vipers' only goal of the second half. Schroeder, who has signed to play next season at West Texas A&M University, pitched her first shutout of the season against Lockhart after facing only four shots in the game.

"We showed all of our strengths in these two games," Jade Payne said. "We've come a long ways since the starts of the school year. We had some bumps in the road, but we've all come together as a team. I think we're ready for a great year."

Sarah Tucker scored two goals and Shannon Danesi added another as St. Joseph picked up a 3-0 win over Bay City to open its tournament action. The Lady Flyers play Lockhart on Saturday at 10:45 a.m.

  • Thank you for following the girls soccer tourn. I would like Victoria to be aware of the scrappy little team from St. Agnes who will be facing your Varsity Viper girls soccer team. They have defeated 3 teams with a 17 - 4 record. The interesting part of the story is that due to injuries and committments of the Varsity for the weekend, the team is composed of 10 freshmen, 1 sophmore and no substitutes at this time. With this David and Goliath background the St. Agnes Tigers still feel they will be the champions. Thank you Victoria for hosting the games and good luck.
