Attention High School Seniors
The Victoria Livestock Show Scholarship applications are currently available at the extension office or on the 4-H Web site (http://victoria-tx.tamu.edu). Applications are due no later than at 5 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 15. Additional scholarship opportunities will be posted on the Victoria County 4-H Web site as the information becomes available. You are encouraged to check it frequently.
Community Service
Club Recycling Challenge - 4-H Ambassadors Katelyn Rather and Shaylyn Drozd are challenging each club to see who can collect the most recycled goods and bring them to the 4-H County Council meeting at 6 p.m. Jan. 20.
Clubs are allowed to bring paper, plastic, and aluminum recyclable items. Items will be weighed and the club with the heaviest recycled load will win a pizza party. Remember, you must bring all the items to the 4-H County Council meeting on Jan. 20 - items will only be accepted at this time.
"Recycle for Sight" Service Project - Aaron and Sam Portis will continue to collect eyeglasses for "Lion's Club Recycle for Sight." New, used, damaged glasses and cases may be donated by calling Aaron or Sam at 361-782-0349. The glasses will be sent to Corpus Christi for evaluation, boxing, and shipping to donation sites where they will be handed out to individuals who would otherwise not have glasses.
Photography Project
Will have a project meeting from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the 4-H Activity Center. For more information call Terry Tucker at 361-935-7445.
Consumer Education Project
Do you care about money? Is bargain shopping right up your alley? If so, the Consumer Education project is for you. In the 4-H Consumer Education project, you will learn: how to process information to make the best economical choices for a given situation; how to comparison shop by price, product quality, store or manufacturer; how to use skills or improved practices related to financial literacy and money management; the rights and responsibilities of consumers; how to effectively communicate with others; skills such as decision-making, getting along with others, planning and organizing, and responsibility. If you would like to sign up for the Consumer Education project or are just looking for more information, please call Joycelyn Drozd at 361-578-0006. Project meetings will be held January through April.
Houston Breeding Gilt Exhibitors
Please be reminded that your entry to Houston is incomplete until you provide the extension office with the appropriate animal registration information. This needs to be taken care of ASAP. If you have any questions, please let us know.
Clothing and Textiles
The Texas 4-H Clothing and Textiles Clothing Advisory Board has selected two new community service activities for 2009 and needs your help.
The Anti-Ouch Pouch was designed by Deon Maas and is dedicated to her mother, Doris Lock, who taught her to sew. Both women are breast cancer survivors. This soft pillow is designed to be worn snugly against the underarm area to cushion the area after breast surgery or during radiation treatment.
Sew Much Comfort, a non-profit organization that makes adaptive clothing for our injured service men and women. SMC sews and alters clothing for injured military personnel who find it difficult to fit in normal clothing due to injuries. These medical conditions may require large fixators, prosthetics and casts that are too bulky to fit under ordinary clothing or underwear. SMC donates clothes to every major military hospital in the U.S. and a hospital in Germany.
The project includes collecting boxers and T-shirts that can be sent to the SMC volunteer seamstresses to be adapted for injured soldiers. Patterns and additional informational documents are available on the Victoria County 4-H Web site under the "Clothing and Textiles" project page (http://victoria-tx.tamu.edu).
A Clothing and Textile workshop is being planned for March and we would like adult and teen leader input. If you are interested in helping lead this project, please call Sarah Womble at 361-575-4581. County Fashion Show will also be coming up in March. Participants can either enter the "buying" or "construction" categories. Now is a great time to begin comparison shopping if you will be buying your outfit, or finding patterns if you will be constructing your outfit.
