Pat Butler has 27 years of newspaper experience, and he's looking forward to returning to the profession.
Butler will become the sports editor of the Victoria Advocate on Monday.
Former Advocate sports editor Coy Slavik resigned in September.
"I've always wanted to be a sports editor, and now I'm getting my chance to do it in a place where people really enjoy their sports and at a locally-owned newspaper with an outstanding sports department," Butler said. "I've also liked everything I've seen and read about Victoria and this part of Texas."
Butler comes to Victoria from California where he was working as a news anchor for Nevada County Broadcasters in the Sacramento area.
Butler is a graduate of South Dakota State University and worked for newspapers in Sioux Falls, S.D., and Albuquerque, N.M., before moving to California where he worked for the Record Searchlight in Redding, the Fairfield Daily Republic and The Union in Grass Valley.
"I will be in the live-and-learn mode for the first few weeks," Butler said. "While I have a lot of experience as a journalist, there's a lot I need to learn about this area. In fact, I want to hear from readers and encourage them to call or e-mail and let me know what they see in the newspaper and on the Web site."
Butler's wife, Stacy, plans to remain in California until theirson Edwin, 17, completes his senior year of high school. Butler's son Sean, 19, also lives in California.
"I'm really looking forward to living in Victoria and working in a community that has so much going for itself," Butler said. "It's going to be a pleasure to cover sports here and be involved with the sports community."
Butler will not be the only addition to the Advocate sports staff. Julian Cavazos will begin work on Jan. 26 as a multimedia sports specialist.
Cavazos is a recent graduate of Brigham Young University. He has interned at the Brownsville Herald, McAllen Monitor, and Arizona Republic and worked as a reporter for the Ventana al Mundo TV show.
