Happy New Year to one and all. This new year will be full of changes and opportunities. The changes and opportunities I speak of are new recreational opportunities for all to recreate more, including myself.

On Jan. 21, at 4:30 p.m., we will have the grand opening of the Skatepark, which is located adjacent to the Youth Sports Complex on Ben Wilson Street. The Skatepark has already proven to be a success due to the number of kids enjoying the new opportunity.

Later this spring, the Lone Tree Hike and Bike Trail will open. At this time it is still under construction. Almost two miles of concrete trail will be available for users to walk, run or stroll along Lone Tree Creek. The trail begins at Airline Road and meanders along the creek to Mockingbird Lane. The trail will be 10 feet wide and will allow multiple people to walk side by side. In addition, there will be lighting and benches.

A new league will start at the Adult Sports Complex - kickball. A recreational league is forming for interested teams that want to have fun playing kickball on Wednesday nights. Bring out the kid in you and join our Kickball League today.

The Youth Sports Complex is nearing completion. Teams will be playing this year at the new complex beginning in March. Little League will have registration on Jan. 17, 24, 31 and Feb. 7, at Premier Sporting Goods. Girls Softball registration dates have not been determined.

For information on registration dates for Little League and Girls Softball, please watch Channel 15.

If you have any questions about these events, please contact the Parks and Recreation Department at 361-485-3200 or visit the city's Web site at www.victoriatx.org.

Doug Cochran is the Director of Parks and Recreation for the Victoria Parks and Recreation Department. Contact him at 361-485-3200 or dcochran@victoriatx.org

  • While I agree that using safety gear is a great idea and the responsible thing to do, lets not give our police force more babysitting responsibilities. I know, let's have some expectations for the parents! How about the PARENTS go and supervise their youngins?

  • I saw a video clip of the new skate park on the news and noticed not one piece of safety gear on the skaters. Hopefully the city changes the rules of use for the skate park to include safety gear.
