It didn't take Texas State University golf coach Mike Akers long to realize that his moving his women's tournament to Victoria was a perfect situation.
Even after watching his squad finish third in last year's inaugural event, Akers doesn't regret the move.
"This is the type of event they remember," Akers said Thursday while in Victoria to finalize plans for this year's tournament scheduled for March 8-10. "The community and members of the Victoria Country Club got involved and made everyone feel welcome. Those are the types of tournaments players remember at the end of the year and it just makes it that much easier to get teams to confirm for the next year."
Victoria's hospitality did pay dividends for Akers and his Lady Bobcats as 14 teams, including 13 Division I schools, will compete in this year's Claud Jacobs Intercollegiate at Victoria Country Club.
The top three finishers - Sam Houston State, Lamar and Texas State - will return as will five other teams from last year's event. Joining the trio will be Centenary, McNeese, the University of Missouri-Kansas City, Houston Baptist, and Lubbock Christian.
The rest of the field will include a Texas flavor with UT-El Paso, UT-Pan American and UT-San Antonio entered, along with Wichita State, Louisiana-Monroe, and Arkansas Tech.
"Last year we had basically three teams I felt coming in that would vie for the championship and those three teams ended up in the top three," Akers said. "This year there's probably eight teams in there that can win the tournament."
And that is exactly what Akers wants to see his tournament evolve into, one that anyone in the field can win.
"In my eyes the better the teams you can bring in, the better your ranking is going to be," Akers said. "In college golf a lot of it is dictated on the strength of the tournaments you go to as far as you rankings go."
Sam Houston, Lamar and Texas State - all members of the Southland Conference - battled from the get-go last year.
The three teams were only five shots apart after the opening round with Sam Houston holding a one-shot edge on Lamar. But the 36-hole opening day was far from over and Lamar slipped past Sam Houston for a four-shot advantage going into the second day's final round.
When the dust had clear, Sam Houston had posted the only sub-300 round of the event to claim the title by nine shots over Lamar. Texas State would finish 20 shots back.
With the University of Houston-Victoria preparing to introduce golf to its athletic program later this year, the tournament will also be an opportune time for area golf fans to witness the collegiate golf scene.
Hole in one
Colony Creek Country Club's newest employee Charlie Duke broke in the course the right way this week with the first ace of the year on Tuesday.
Duke hit a perfect 5-iron at the 165-yard, par-3 14th hole, a shot witnessed by his boss, Greg Hughes.
