Victoria has spent more than $10 million on the Community Center Park in recent years, but more improvements could be coming.

And the city would like to hear from the public what - if any - improvements it would like.

The Parks and Recreation Commission has been tapped to be the contact for the public and then make recommendations.

"Each one of us is to reach out to the community and ask of anyone what they think needs to be done," said Sharon Steen, who chairs the parks commission. "Nothing, something, what?"

The city spent $10 million to build a sports complex and $275,000 for a skate park near the community center. It also spent $1.2 million updating the community center dome and restrooms.

Doug Cochran, director of parks and recreation, said the community center dome and arena were built in the late 1960s and the annex in the 1970s. He envisions the complex continuing to serve the public for decades with the help of the parks commission and public.

"It's really a plan to take our facility into the future 20 or 25 years, meeting the needs of our community and possibly bringing in small- to medium-sized conventions," he said.

Even though the economy is shaky, there's no reason the city can't be planning for the future, Steen said.

Steen predicted the economy will be as strong as ever in five or 10 years.

"As this city grows, you cannot stop moving forward," she said.

  • Suzy,

IMO, you are exactly ON topic. You've got an idea for the Parks Commission to hear and consider. At the bottom of the article is an explanation about how to formally present your idea. Likely, no one is going to take your idea and run with it, that is not how progress is made - its up to you! Go for it.

  • I agree. Restrooms, and covered facility. Restrooms, water fountains should be readily available for all children. The Community Center needs to be completely overhauled if not torn down. What a joke. There should be at least a 10,000 seat capacity auditorium in this community for concerts and other things.
Maybe something modeled after the Verizon Amphitheaters but on a smaller scale.?  That would be real cheap to build on one of the existing soccer fields.  The city could bring in big time artist and let the gates and concessions from a concert pay for the facility.  Willie Nelson plays at Schroeder Hall for crying out loud, we could put 10,000 visitors in a seat and make a fortune if Willie played an outdoor concert.  Shiner does it and it is widely successful.  The whole state comes into Shiner for Bocktoberfest.  Why doesn't the city of Victoria ever think of doing a concert series and using the money made to put back into the city?  Could you imagine a country festival on a weekend with a Willie Nelson, or a headliner like Rascal Flatts, Taylor Swift, the Bellamy Brothers (for us old timers), Robert Earl Keen, Big and Rich..........That would be awesome, and those were just names that popped into my head.  There you go..........The Victoria Texas 1st Annual Country Music Festival.  All proceeds benefiting local United Way and The City of Victoria Youth Parks and Recreation mission!  How bout that.  I should run for City Council...lol
There are tons of real good acts that are current and modern that would schedule the facility if it were built.  What a revenue generating venture!  Someone please take my idea and run with it, the city is sitting on opportunity!

  • We are constantly bombarded with news of a weak economy lead by a failure in the real estate market with forclosure forecasts growing daily. Our local tax base is based on property taxes and the reality is that base is likely to shrink as property values drop. Victoria taxpayers are already facing a "loaded gun" with huge bonds from VISD. Now is not the time to further indebt taxpayers with more spending, be it for sidewalks or further expansion at the community center.
