The Victoria College showed its continued support for University of Houston-Victoria's expansion to a four-year university.

The University of Houston System first approved an agreement in December 2008. The VC board of trustees and Tom Butler, president, approved the agreement at the Monday meeting and made changes to the document to clarify references.

"The changes were minor and did not impact the agreement," Butler said. "We either added a phrase or made distinct reference to the appendix."

The agreement came about through the Commission on Expanding Access for Higher Education in the fall of 2008.

"The document is the result of cooperative meetings between UHV and VC stemming from principles recommended by the commission," Tim Hudson, UHV president, said.

The community requested that both institutions form a written agreement ensuring that expansion would not hurt VC, and this agreement does exactly that, Butler said.

"This mechanism will ensure that Victoria College is not harmed," Butler said.

Along with the approval of the agreement the board authorized Butler to sign the document.

"The agreement is finished," Hudson said. "Any minor changes or clarifications can be agreed to by Dr. Butler and me."

Both presidents will continue to meet and identify the changes to the document to make sure both institutions are in agreement, he said.

State Rep. Geanie Morrison, R-Victoria, plans to file UHV legislation soon get the state's approval for the expansion.
