Q: I'm a University of Houston-Victoria alumnus and have just been laid off from my job. Does UHV offer any services that can help me find employment?

A: The poor economy is affecting job seekers and employers, but UHV Career Services can help both groups. The office provides free services for university students and alumni looking for jobs and business owners searching for employees.

Career Services coordinator Eunice Mesa and her staff can provide assistance in the areas of resume writing, career exploration and job searching tips. Mesa also can connect business owners needing employees with UHV students and alumni searching for jobs.

"We want to make sure UHV alumni know that resources are available to them, and we want business owners with vacancies to contact us," Mesa said.

One helpful resource available to the public is UHVconnect (www.uhvconnect.org), a free online social network with more than 1,700 members that brings together people interested in the university. The Career Connection portion of UHVconnect allows visitors to submit and view job openings, search resumes and read about businesses owned by members. UHVconnect also provides a way for members to network.

"Networking is still one of the most effective ways to find a job," Mesa said.

Mesa also is working to schedule several free workshops for job seekers this spring that will be open to the public. Topics will include interviewing techniques, resume writing and what employers are looking for in applicants.

Two career fairs already are scheduled in Victoria for the spring semester. They are the Education Career Fair from 10 a.m. to noon Feb. 11 in the Multi-Purpose Room of the UHV University Center, 3007 N. Ben Wilson St.; and The Victoria College/UHV Career Fair from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. March 25 in the VC Student Center.

For more information, contact Mesa at 361-570-4369 or mesae@uhv.edu.

Q: I'm looking for continuing education opportunities for my job as a counselor. Is UHV offering any workshops that would help me?

A: Two University of Houston-Victoria instructors are teaching a continuing education course to educate social workers, licensed professional counselors and psychologists about ethical standards.

"Ethical Standards for the Counselor in the Professional Setting" will take place from 9 a.m. to noon Jan. 31 in the Multi-Purpose Room of the UHV University Center. Mary Mayorga, an assistant professor of education/counseling, and Ann Wardle, an adjunct instructor in the UHV School of Education & Human Development, will lead the course.

The cost is $95, and those who attend can earn 0.3 continuing education credits. For more information, call the UHV Office of Training & Continuing Education at 361-570-4361.
