Ask to check out Linda Parker's resume and she might ask, "Which one?"
At least, she will now.
Parker was one of about 40 people who attended "Surviving a Layoff," a two-day seminar hosted by Workforce Solutions of the Golden Crescent.
And the main lessons she took away were the importance of networking and of modernizing her resume.
"You should have a resume for every position, every job you're applying for," said Parker, who has been laid off since June. "Not just one."
At the end of the session, attendees received CDs with various resume layouts, she said, which will help.
"Now I just have to get somewhere with a computer," she said. "I'm ready to work on them."
The resume information also hit home with Janie Sanchez, who was out of a job when the emergency shelter she worked at closed in November.
Sanchez, who volunteers for Faith Family Church, said she never realized her volunteer activities could find a place on her resume.
The seminar's speaker, certified career coach MeLisa Rogers, told her that Sanchez's behind-the-scenes work with Faith Family's productions shows she can work under pressure and on deadline. It also demonstrates an ability to work with others.
"It's almost like bragging on yourself but nobody else is going to do that," Sanchez said.
Both women say they're anxious go use some of the tips in their job search but, if all goes well, Sanchez won't have long to use them.
She's already received a phone call from one potential employer and plans to apply for a job with the city of Victoria soon.
