GOLIAD - Ten people, believed to be illegal immigrants, were injured around 1 p.m. today when the truck they were in lost control and wrecked on U.S. Highway 59, about two miles south of Franke Road in Goliad County.

The truck was traveling through Goliad when a Goliad County Sheriff's deputy attempted to stop him on suspicion of speeding. Instead of stopping, the driver took off, an official at the scene said.

The driver then lost control and wrecked in the northbound lane of the highway, the official said. The driver was ejected and thrown about 50 feet from the truck. He was flown from the scene by Citizens Air Medical.

The other occupants of the truck, who were mostly in the bed of the truck, were injured, the official said.

For a complete report on the wreck read Thursday's Advocate.

  • Our readers regularly flag comments in which anyone wishes harm on others. We respond to those reports and delete those posts.

Our readers also routinely flag comments for personal attacks or unsubstantiated assertions. We allow more leeway in terms of criticizing public officials, but we'll delete those posts, too, if our readers request it and we see no solid reason to leave the comment.

If you have specific concerns about any public official, please call the newsroom at 361-580-NEWS or e-mail us at newsroom@vicad.com. A signed letter to the editor is another powerful way to be heard. The calls and e-mails may be anonymous if you request that. We want our reporters to investigate any and all concerns you have.

But, yes, anonymous posts are subject to review and deletion.

  • Dang, I just noticed, or more correct it was pointed out, the post from N45BA was deleted. I suppose someone doesn't like dump trucks.

  • prove, you are calling me sorry, heartless & some other name I can't recall (too much Absolute) & then you want to go whine & tattle to the paper because you feel you are picked on here....you sir, are a hypocrite. BTW, I am female.

    January 15, 2009 at 9:59 p.m.
  • Hey N45BA,

Your wish is granted. Oh wait, we were doing that before you ask.
I guess the only fair thing to do is grant you another wish.
Kidding aside, folks this is going to get nasty. Not my post but the situation. Our economy sucks and good hard working people are losing jobs left and right. Get ready!

    January 15, 2009 at 8:43 p.m.
  • Talk about Sorry,,Bud you take the cake. Heart of stone will get you nowhere. Tell me,,,,was it fun typing that out? Probably sitting back with your hands behind your head,,,like a Proud Man,,,Big Man you are! These were illegals breaking the law,,,but they are also Human." Mangled,,,,and dump the contents"?. Is that what you want to be called when get 'Dumped' in the grave?,((Contents))? Might as well be,,sound like you have No heart.. I'm with you mor4u, and Reyrey sounds like you both have a heart,,not like some of these morons, who enjoy making hurtful comments.

  • If "we" would quit making life so attractive to the illegals, maybe they'd quit coming over here by the truck loads. I heard they caught some on the highway between Cuero and Yoakum today.

    January 15, 2009 at 7:27 p.m.
  • There is a difference between a stranger & a person in our country illegally trying to outrun the law. I seriously doubt they would stop & render aid if I required it.

In life some people take dangerous, uneccessary risks, with those risks are consequences. If they take the risk, they should suffer the consequences. But I'm sure someone will say they were running late for a job an American wouldn't do.

Now, why it offends me that we have to foot their medical bills. When an innocent person is involved in an accident that they did not cause, if the person responsible does not have adequate insurance, the victim is stuck with the medical bills. This is an innocent person, who did nothing wrong besides go out that day. These people CHOSE to do what they did, come here illegally & try to outrun the police, when they get hurt, we have to pay, WHY?!? I would rather pay for the poor soul who was a victim instead of paying for the criminal. What are the odds this guy driving this truck had insurance? If he had hit someone & all had been injured, they would have free medical care & the person hit would be screwed, somehow that ain't right.

    January 15, 2009 at 5:16 p.m.
  • vbb, you actually wish death on some people? Mmmmmm, you are sorry. There is no point to respond to your ignorance. An American huh? you are so proud of that fact? I am an American, wounded in combat, does that make me a better American? This is not about wearing the flag on your sleeve but about being a human being. I do hope that you or your family never find yourself in a situation where you are depending on strangers for your life.

wow, thank god i was raised right and believe in helping your fellow man.

hopefully all are ok and recieve the proper medical care. after this has happened, then let's figure out if any laws were broken.

Please publish your home address so we will know where to send the hospital bills! Sounds like your all for the lawbreakers and we should all share in supporting their values. I for one am not interested in helping them at all, they broke OUR laws and now some bleeding heart wants me to foot the bill. Sorry but my bank account can't handle my bills and their arrogance at the same time.

    January 15, 2009 at 9:39 a.m.
  • complaining is one thing, a very common human trait. wishing death upon people is not something normal, rational, sane people throw out there.

    January 15, 2009 at 9:18 a.m.
  • Look, we all bitch & moan about our tax dollars being wasted, our tax burdens growing larger while our paychecks grow smaller & the ever increasing violence & lawlessness in our community, yet we are willing to throw money at people who could care less about us, our laws or our country, just because they were injured while breaking our laws. We complain about taking care of our own criminals, welfare cheats, losers & dregs of the universe and they are Americans.

Do you honestly think these people wouldn't have hurt innocents if they happened to be in their way? The only reason they even stopped is because they lost control of the truck & wrecked!
Geez, I'm tired of allowing my emotions to bleed my paychecks dry. My big heart is not going to feed my family & at the rate all this is going (taxpayers footing the worlds bills), it just may have to. Lord knows the government doesn't give a tiny rats ass about me & my American family.

    January 15, 2009 at 12:07 a.m.
  • how big of you vbb.

    January 14, 2009 at 11:49 p.m.
  • I have a heart.....for people who deserve it. These people broke many laws & put many innocent people in harms way because of their selfish, dangerous actions. If children had been hurt or killed everybody would be screaming & crying for these criminals heads, but since no one was hurt, except those that deserved it, you people are sympathetic. Their police would care less about us & our injuries if the tables were turned. My small perimetered heart is saving its blood supply for people a tad more deserving.

    January 14, 2009 at 11:37 p.m.
  • Wow VBB. Did you really mean to say "shame it wasn't a fatal accident." No medical treatment? I bet if your little kitten was run over by a car you'd have more sympathy for it. These are humans. I agree with you roberttx. Give them the medical attention they need and send them back. I too work hard for everything I have, including insurance, and worry about college expenses, but I'm not heartless. If you have children roberttx I bet they are smart kids and have a good heart.

    January 14, 2009 at 11:21 p.m.
  • Robert,tx  I am sure the bills are accruring as I type. Why don't you run down to the hospital and offer to pay if you feel so charitable. I am a Christian, I tithe, make donations to numerous LEGAL charities. I pay my property and income taxes, nearly $1000 a month for health insurance for me and my spouse and another separate policy for a child in college. Don't get me started on college expenses for working folks (if we were on Medicaid and didn't work my child could probably go for little to nothing but that's another subject. We are struggling now that the stock market is playing havoc on spouses retirement account and we are having to give up things we want and deserve while illegals and lawbreakers get the benefits for free. What's right about that? I never said I wanted any physical harm to these folks I just don't want to pay for it. I hope the fellow driving had alot of insurance so they can go after him, believe me, the illegals know the system and they will sue the deep pockets. If you think I am wrong, go to the District Clerk's office and read the law suits. It will make your skin crawl. I don't know the answer, but something has to be done about this. Sorry again if I stepped on any toes but it's time the regular, working man/women stand up. Kudos to the alert deputy, keep up the good work and thank God you weren't hurt.

    January 14, 2009 at 7:59 p.m.
  • VBB, you bleeding heart. :-)

While I mostly agree, see my post below, I don't want my country to be the same as Mexico.

Now don't Make me Start capitalizing every other Word and whipping out my Diploma on you.

    January 14, 2009 at 7:47 p.m.
  • They were being pulled over for speeding & they attempted to outrun the police. They broke 2 laws right there. Law abiding citizens are held hostage in hospitals over payment, but criminals that don't belong here get air lifted & immediate care all for nada. If they do happen to be here illegally, that is 3 laws broken plus the risk to random Americans trying to outrun the cops. Shame it wasn't a fatal accident. If this were an American attempting to outrun cops in Mexico, they woulda been shot or thrown in jail injured & dying, never to be heard from again.

    January 14, 2009 at 7:29 p.m.
  • The injured people, if illegal, should be stabilized then shipped back to their home country. Assuming that country is Mexico, it is only about a three hour ride. We already know laws were broken. We don't know they are illegals but we do know that they were being pulled over and ran.

    January 14, 2009 at 7:19 p.m.
  • wow, thank god i was raised right and believe in helping your fellow man.

  • RR = Who is ignorant? We should feel okay about paying for the undocumented/illegal aliens medical bills and then hold their hand and pay for delivering them home. If one day your social security financial and medical benefits are exhausted because of decades of this abuse, I would be surprised if you would not be having second thoughts.

Chica - Really now. Do you think that if the truck that was being pursued saw the law enforcement car slow down, the truck would slow down and they would just follow each other around the countryside for a nice afternoon ride?

    January 14, 2009 at 6:39 p.m.
  • If your belly hurts, take some Pepto, you will be ok. I am not one to defend illegals but if they are hurt, and they need help, help them and then send them home but dont actually rationalized why they should not get medical aid. I know, I will get plenty of replies from ignorant people and you are welcome to reply. Besides, you people are bored since you are reading the Victoria Advocate and want to read what your wrote. Chances are that you are going to save the page and send it to your families.

    January 14, 2009 at 5:53 p.m.
  • Interestedreader...No, you're aren't being shallow. You're being realistic. I can barely afford doctor and medication even with insurance because the deductables are so high, but these people will be cared for at no expense to themselves, but you and I will help pick up the tab for them. My belly is getting full, too. I'm not concerned if some think I'm a bigot. I'm a U.S. citizen who thinks that people who are here illegally should not get squat in free food, medical care or housing. If they have medical problems, they can go back home and be cared for there.

    January 14, 2009 at 5:31 p.m.
  • They need to quit chasing the indocumentados and just follow them. You can't outrun radar or cell phones. This chasing down 59 and onto the backroads is getting more dangerous all the time. These chases are a danger to the citizens who live in that area and travel down the road. It will be too late when an innocent bystander gets killed.

    January 14, 2009 at 5:04 p.m.
  • Interested Reader, There's nothing shallow about it. Our taxes pay for indigent health care all the time. Often, it is for the care of illegal aliens. The recipients must laugh at our stupidity.

    Here's an e-mail I received today...

    C O W S

Is it just me, or does anyone else find it amazing that during the mad cow epidemic our government could track a single cow, born in Canada almost three years ago, right to the stall where she slept in the state of Washington? And, they tracked her calves to their stalls. But they are unable to locate 11 million illegal aliens wandering around our country. Maybe we should give each of them a cow.

  • Pickup truck involved in single vehicle accident injures ten.....only in south Texas! My home sweet, home!

    January 14, 2009 at 4:27 p.m.
  • I can't believe that they were refered to as illegal instead of undocumented!

    January 14, 2009 at 4:10 p.m.
  • MORE EXPENSE TO THE TAXPAYERS............. IT'S A SHAME THAT WORKING, LEGAL CITIZENS HAVE TO PAY FOR HEALTH CARE/INSURANCE  AND THESE ILLEGALS WILL GET CARE AND NO CARES ABOUT BILLS.... SORRY IF THIS SOUNDS SHALLOW BUT I HAVE HAD A BELLY FULL OF IT
