Shannon Permenter wasted no time beginning his new job.

Permenter was already working at Boling on Wednesday after being selected as the school's athletic director and head football coach on Tuesday night by a unanimous vote of the Boling school district board of trustees.

Permenter was an assistant coach at Bryan for one season and previously worked as an assistant at Needville, Medina Valley and Rice Consolidated.

"I was looking for the right situation," Permenter said. "Boling was one of those places where I thought it would be a great place to be an athletic director. It's a great situation. There's a lot of tradition at this place and I'm excited to be part of that."

Permenter replaces Neal Majewski, who resigned in November after eight seasons at Boling, including four as the athletic director and head football coach.

Charles Butcher, superintendent of the Boling school district, said the district received 90 applications for the position and interviewed five candidates before he recommended Permenter.

"He was our No. 1 choice," Butcher said. "We got nothing but good reports. We felt like he had a really good background. He went to several programs when they were down and was there when they turned around and improved. He was already familiar with the area. He knows about our history as well as our pride and work ethic in the past."

Boling started only one senior on the football team last season and went 1-8 and had a 1-4 record in District 29-2A. The Bulldogs last made the playoffs in 2006.

"The No. 1 thing we'll try to do is get our numbers up," Permenter said. "Offensively and defensively there will be a change. We'll be going to a multiple Wing-T rather than the spread and on defense we'll be a multiple 4-3. We're confident the kids will buy into it."
