Extra chairs had to be pulled out to accommodate the more than 35 unexpected Victoria residents who attended the district's workshop on the process for naming the new schools and facilities Tuesday.
The workshop was held so that board members could review the top name suggestions made by the community.
The district's Leadership Committee met Friday to sort the suggestions and make graphs to help the board identify the most popular school names.
Most residents left when Bernard Klimist, board vice president, announced that none of the schools would be given a name until the regular board meeting Feb. 19.
The board discussed the suggested names and names they had in mind.
"We have to move on with out controversy and focus on education that is what we are here for," Klimist said.
A popular submission among the board was naming the high schools East and West High School.
"I like the suggestion of an east and west high school because I think it will best represent the schools," Ronald Tyrone, retired, said.
He does not have any children in the school district but wanted to see how the board went about the process and to hear their thoughts about the suggestions.
"My nieces and nephews will be attending the schools and I want to make sure the names reflect everyone in the community," he said.
The board agreed on a list of names for all the new schools and facilities. They will review the list at the next board meeting on Thursday.

Steph I like your idea, good sense of humor.........hahaha
I too think we should make a radical change.
January 15, 2009 at 10:13 p.m.Tstorm....the correct spelling is meant not ment....since you want to go there.
January 15, 2009 at 9:14 p.m.
I like the Gobblers and the Cobras. I think we should name our schools Cuero High School and Industrial High School.
If for nothing else I think it would be funny to watch the expression on the Superintendents faces of those two schools when they opened the paper and read that humdinger! Yeah, that's it. C'mon VISD it would be a good joke that 25 years down the road we could all tell stories enjoy a laugh about.
Heck you never know.........it kind of tricky. Maybe we would accidentally get kids to enroill in the wrong school. Ahh, tricks are fun until people get all bent out of shape. Those are just my suggestions. I am thinking about getting a t-shirt made that says Go Victoria Cuero High School Gobblers! It mnay cause a ground swell of support, and if not at least everyone will think I'm wild and crazy. That's been a problem for me for quite some tim,e. My friends say I am not wild and crazy enough. Oh well what do they know?
Party poopers.
January 15, 2009 at 11:19 a.m.JackOfAllTrades -- No his last daughter graduated last year. So no kids in VISD.
January 15, 2009 at 9:19 a.m.For crying out loud, why can't we go back to Victoria High and Stroman High? They never should have been changed in the first place!
January 15, 2009 at 8:47 a.m.I only knew Mr. Middleton for a short time I am good friends with his daughters. I think it would be a wonderful tribute to him and all he did for his community, students and family.
January 15, 2009 at 4:05 a.m.thanks. to be honest....my kids have all graduated from VISD...but as a tax payer, I'd rather pay for ketchup or mustard!!! a little zip and zing....no zzzzzzzzzzzzz!
January 14, 2009 at 10:50 p.m.Loved your comment JOHN7,
January 14, 2009 at 10:43 p.m.Exciting names right?,,,,but don't complain to loud,,,you might just get shot down by these Folks who call us whiners. These new names are about as Lame as you can get, I have to agree. And honestly I don't think this old city of Victoria has an imagination. And yes,,sad to say, these so called board members are in charge of our childrens learning. Pass the mayonnaise sandwhich,,but cut the crust.LOL....High Five to ya JOHN7
after reading early posts on this topic....maybe the mascots can be the Jets and the Sharks!!! and the drill teams can have a signature dance, snapping there fingers and jumping in the air! Watch Westside Story........
January 14, 2009 at 10:41 p.m.Yeah, that's it. Eastside - Westside; Sharks and Jets.
January 14, 2009 at 10:38 p.m.those school names are about as exciting as a mayonnaise sandwich, while you're wearing khaki. Since the 2 high schools here in town already have blue, white and black for their colors MAYBE one new h.s. could have white, black and blue and the other can have black, blue and white!!! That's about the imagination the old city of "Victorian" has! Go East...Go West...shake that..........blue, white and zzzzzzzz Come on people.........that's all the school board came up with......and they are in charge of our children's learning.....zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz!
January 14, 2009 at 10:20 p.m.Tstorm .....want you just move . I heard Vidor Tx is a very lovely place . No gangs , No blacks and not to many Mexican . The good ol'boys there would love you and you would fit in great.
January 14, 2009 at 9:39 p.m.My vote is for Belltower High and Woodway High...
Honestly, it should be after an educator who made a difference such as Cade, Middleton, etc (no Moses please) or a service man from our area (such as Walters).
January 14, 2009 at 9:16 p.m.I like the generic east and west idea but can we extend it and say "eastside" and "westside". For some reason Victoria East High or Victoria West High just doesn't flow to me.
January 14, 2009 at 8:41 p.m.Roy Benavidez should be respected for his service, but I believe that if we were to honor someone for their service, then we should honor someone from Victoria. There are many people from Victoria that have been injured and have given their lives while serving this community. I am not just referring to those who served in the military, but also to those that have served as police officers, fire fighters, etc. It is a shame that some people believe we need to look elsewhere for heroes, when we have so many here.
January 14, 2009 at 8:27 p.m.I believe it would be a great honor to our community to name two of the schools after Mr. Cade and Mr. Middleton. Both of these men dedicated their lives to our school district and our community. In regards to the person who said that Mr. Middleton didn't do anything special, "he just died," must not have been involved in the Victoria school system before 2002. This man loved his job and loved our children like his own. Anyone who ever passed through his classroom when he was a teacher or through Howell when he was the principal, were fortunate to have learned from this phenomenal educator. He was also very involved in the Victoria community and volunteered his time to improve the lives of others. He served as a mentor to many people in our community and was also viewed as an inspiration to anyone who was lucky enough to meet him. Our community lost a great man when he passed away. To suggest that he "just died" is an insult to the history of this community.
Yes, Victoria does have a strong hispanic heritage, however, we also have a very strong czech heritage as well. In fact, there are many heritages in Victoria. To suggest that we should name any school a particular name specifically because of any heritage would cause problems. Unless you are going to honor every heritage represented by our community, you are going to insult someone. Yes, East and West may be generic names but they are unprejudiced names that should not cause any resentment from one group of people to another. The mascots and school colors will differentiate the two schools. It's the student's hard work, dedication, and school spirit that will make the schools stand out, not the name.
I realize that any name that is chosen for any of the schools will bring controversy. Thankfully we live in a great country where we can all express our own opinions and let our voices be heard. While the school board may not consider every possible name suggested, they have spent a lot of time trying to narrow down the list to those names that will best serve our community. I, along with many of you, do have issues with the school board on other topics. However, can you imagine the pressure of trying to pick the "perfect" name for an institution that will be a permanent fixture in our community? It would be an immense amount of pressure to try to pacify every community member and pick the "perfect" name. Not everyone will be happy with the choices. Once the names are chosen, we all need to come together and support these schools as part of our community regardless of what the names will be. It is all about our children receiving a quality education....isn't it?
January 14, 2009 at 7:58 p.m.Put the naming rights up for bids!
January 14, 2009 at 7:07 p.m.The "Buffalo Wild Wings" now that has snap!!!
Thought NYC and I am assuming that the previous person was referring to NYC, the primary schools are known as PS and the number. HS have names. So coming back to the names, Chupacabras East and West. For mascots we can use Steve Tyler and Sheriff O'Connor.
January 14, 2009 at 5:38 p.m.Inevitably when you choose a name of a person, living or dead, someone will feel slighted in one way or another. Victoria is fortunate that both the city and county have the same name. Forget the packed auditoriums and endless debate and just name the schools Victoria. East / West / North /South or some numeric designation. It's time to retire the practice of naming schools after those who have gone before us. This is not an off-the-wall idea, the New York school system has done this for decades.
January 14, 2009 at 4:40 p.m.East Chupacabras
January 14, 2009 at 3:42 p.m.West Chichorones
Yes, there are 7 school board members. I Don't know about Ray Walden..whether he has kids or not in VISD. I don't think that De Los Santos or Murphy have any children that are in school. Not to sure about Svetlik or Smith either. I do know that Tami Keeling has a son in high school in VISD. I know that Klimist does not have kids in VISD. His daughter attends private school ..for anyone who was wondering!
January 14, 2009 at 2:29 p.m.East Park High - Mascot: Amigos, Drill Team: Amigas - Friendliest Drill Team in South Texas! Colors: Brown and Gold
West Oak High - Mascot: Compadres, Drill Team: Compadradores - Best Friends, and Best Drill Team of South Texas! Colors: Brown and Gold
Sorry, I just couldn't help myself!
January 14, 2009 at 2:11 p.m.I know there are seven school board members but I do not know if any of them have children in the school district.
January 14, 2009 at 1:46 p.m.i say victoria hig atlantic and victoria high pacific
January 14, 2009 at 1:01 p.m.Just out of curiosity, does anyone know how many school board members we have AND how many of said school board members have students that currently attend VISD???????
January 14, 2009 at 12:55 p.m.what about Martin De Leon high school? he was a good Victorian!
January 14, 2009 at 12:47 p.m.N45BA,
Obviously you don't have children in school of that age, My child is in 7th grade and she is smarter than naming her High school Hannah Montana!!! LoL. East and West is simple..??? absolutely its simple, ...But our kids are smart and stronger than just Simple!!!!! Saying the school when/where they graduate from is/will be a great accomplishment when they graduate. Not Simple!!! Diploma stating you graduated from West Side/East Side is not what our kids want, And yes .... you should be smart enough to realize which school will be rich/poor school. Rivalry!!! Yes absolutely!! but they wont be going around town going West Side!!!!!!! East Side!!!!! It will have a NAME, A name that means Something to our Community!!!!!!(VICTORIA)! something other than North/South/East/West.
January 14, 2009 at 12:42 p.m.East & West... wowww. How plain! Thats all I have to say! Make something people will remember us by! So when people are like where's that school from and they say oh Victoria! come on... Where's East HS from... think people will be like Victoria... LMAO PLEASE!!!
January 14, 2009 at 12:37 p.m.I think one of the HS should be call Chupacabra and the other one Steven Austin. Those character had brought a lot of attention to our neck of the wood, so it should only be mandatory to name those schools after them.
January 14, 2009 at 12:34 p.m.As far as the principal that died, he did not do anything out of the ordinary, he just died (yes, some people will claim that he was the best thing for education since Bloom). Benavidez, he went beyond the call of duty, so if anything I would lean that way. East, West, why not white and brown, they are the same. I think that Chupacabra and Steve Austin are the ones. Dont thank me, just bringing some common sense to this little debate.
Honestly, is a name of a school really that big of a deal? If it were up to me I would name everyone of the schools:
Victoria elementary 1,2,3,etc...
Victoria middle 1,2,3 etc...
Victoria high 1,2,3,etc...
No more wasting money on stupid debates/theories and rubbish. Problem solved and on to the next topic!
January 14, 2009 at 12:28 p.m.Nothing was said about the mascots. Once they chose a name for the schools then they will discuss mascots and colors.
January 14, 2009 at 11:48 a.m.East and West. Wow how original. Is that all you guys could come up with? This town andit's politics cracks me up. It is nothink like this where we have lived before. It's crazy to think that educated people couldn't do better than East and West. Was that really a serious submission?
well at least name it East Park and West Oak if nothing else. Save some face, because that list was terrible.
I too like nameing the middle school Middleton Middle School.
What are the mascots? Anything said about that. The colors?
January 14, 2009 at 11:38 a.m.I knew Mr. Middleton and agree with the 2 people in here who say he was a wonderful educator and principal. My 2 older children had him as a principal at Howell. He died when my older son was in 7th grade. It was a great loss to the entire district.
I support the idea that the new middle school should be named for him. It would be a fitting tribute to the fine man he was and all that he has done for the education of Victoria.
I don't like the idea of giving the new high schools generic names like East/West.... as a previous poster stated, it stereotypes and would excacerbate existing problems....
I say the MOH receipient, Roy Benevidez listed, but can't remember if his name was listed as a possibility for one of the High Schools.... I think one of the High Schools should be named for him. His name should be an inspiration to every student for his service to our Nation, our state.... Not only that, but Victoria has a strong heritage of Hispanic -- We should embrace that, and be proud of it. We have an elementary school named after Martin DeLeon.... so why not a high school named after Roy Benividaz?
January 14, 2009 at 11:30 a.m.West Side? East Side????? That's what this community comes up with????? Ok.. So lets all just think......guys would flash signs at each other in middle school signifying what side of town they lived on. Westsiders /Eastsiders??? The west side kids were the rich kids and the east side was the ghetto." LABELING!!!! There should not be a side. Let the new attending students decide if their will be a side, start new traditions, ask the new incoming freshman, it will be their schools all the way through, let them take part.
January 14, 2009 at 11:09 a.m.Not sure who was the person in charge of censorship of names to be published, but I can tell you that at least 1 very good idea did not make THE list. Right there tells you that low peons like the citizens will not have much say in what the names are - just like consolidation, they have their minds made up and this is just going through the motions to let us think someone cares what the taxpayer citizens want.
January 14, 2009 at 10:52 a.m.Why in the world would we consider plain ole' East and West for the names of the high schools I bet no one voted on those. The school board seems to have an agenda all their own. West Grove, REALLY!!
January 14, 2009 at 10:40 a.m.LC was a great man and my fathers best friend when my he and my father worked at Howell together. My father was the Assistant Principal while he was the Principal. I hope they will also honor his memory in this way. It would be a great thing to always see his name on a school since he cared so much about the students.
January 14, 2009 at 10:17 a.m.glad to see that Congressional Medal of Honor Benavidez at least made the primiary schools list. Why not the high school list is puzzling.
It seems we will have a generic EAST/WEST name for the high school. Again, no recongition for the Victoria I can just wander what the mascot names will be. lol
January 14, 2009 at 9:26 a.m.LC Middleton is a wonderfull name for the JH school. He was the Principal at Howell Middle School before his untimely death. His death was a devastating blow to the school district as he was as fine a man as you would find in education. I hope that the board sees fit to honor LC's memory by chosing his name.
