When Shakespeare's Juliet posed the rhetorical question, "What's in a name? That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet," what happened afterward in that play was tragedy. Ironically, within a name lie all kinds of ties and emotion, respect and honor and feuds and conflict.

So we commend the Victoria school district for soliciting so many fine names for its new schools. But we are glad that we aren't the ones who have to choose from that list.

And we praise the school district for including the community in the process to select names.

Those submitting the names likely have radically varied opinions, and when the process is done, final selections will equate to people being unhappy and people being happy. There are no wrong answers or correct answers in these selections, but there will be opposition to whatever the final choices may be.

School board members: Be prepared for criticism for your final list of names. Again, we are happy we are not in your positions.

Names should be selected quickly, and we should move on to other issues. Consider the depth of the names issue? We don't think it is equivalent to the tragedy in "Romeo and Juliet."

Besides, once names are chosen, the entire process will be repeated to choose mascots and colors.

Let's hope the names chosen won't cause a tragedy. Let's embrace them and move on.

This editorial reflects the views of the Victoria Advocate's editorial board.

  • The potential names lack interest. They are boring. Yes, it will be a hard choice between several Easts and Wests. Grove or Oak...where did that come from? Who are all the archaic fogies picking these unimaginitive names???? Who sent those lack luster names into VISD???? I think there should be another contest/suggestion period, after all the 2 high schools won't open for quite awhile. Also, whatever names are chosen please pick other colors than black and blue, we've been beaten up enough since consolidation.
