Editor, the Advocate:
Your editorial Tuesday concerning DWI checkpoints really got my independent Texas-American dander up. I squirmed around in my seat while I was reading all your reasons why I should be thankful for more government control over my life and that hogwash about a police lieutenant being senior enough to always be fair and honest in administering his checkpoint like in some fairyland.
But the last sentence is why I am here on the computer so early in the morning. "And we feel that every right-thinking citizen should feel the same." Is anyone down there old enough to remember the McCarthy era? Who are you or anyone else to tell me that because I violently disagree with you, that I'm not thinking "right"?
McCarthy would have labeled me a Communist. Today there are other stigmas. I really believe you ought to rethink your position on this. Feeling the way you do, with many of us feeling the opposite, it seems that "right" thinking would dictate a more tolerant attitude toward those who think "wrong."
