Twenty-two dates are on the University of Houston-Victoria softball schedule this season, but there's one not on the schedule that's even more anticipated.

On Friday, Feb. 13, a day before the Jaguars play their first home game, UHV head coach Keri Lambeth is due to have her first child.

"This baby is going to have 15 big sisters as soon as she's here," Lambeth said. "We're a very a close-knit team that is a family. Going into this season adding to the family is exciting for everyone.

"We have such great leadership throughout the team with 10 seniors so I'm not worried about us at all."

The Jaguars are coming off a 32-18 record in their inaugural season and began practice for the first time this year on Tuesday. Lambeth was told by her doctor not to hit, run or throw but that she could stay with her team throughout her pregnancy. Basically, the coach who played high school softball in El Campo was told all she could do was yell.

With her due date a month away and one day before the Jaguars play their first home game against Texas College, the team is embracing everything that will come with Lambeth's baby girl.

"We're all girls and we love babies," UHV first baseman Lindsey Ferguson said. "We've all talked about how we hope she's going to be a good sleeper on the bus on our long road trips. It's going to be great."

Ferguson doesn't know fully what to expect from her coach before and after the baby is born, but she is looking forward to what it could do for the team.

"It's something that I've never experienced with a coach before," Ferguson said. "We've known about it since this summer so we're mentally prepared for the changes that we're going to go through. I really think it's something that will bring us all together."

UHV opens its season on the road at the Galveston Island Tournament on Feb. 6-7. The tournament has been moved to Arthur Bayer Park in Spring because of the damage Hurricane Ike left Galveston with, but has not dampened the excitement of the Jaguars to start the season.

Even the first day of practice on Tuesday was met with enthusiasm.

"For me, it was just like Christmas morning," said UHV center fielder Cirby Ryan of the first day of practice. "I couldn't wait to put on my cleats and get going. I couldn't wait to swing the bat and get started. It's my final season and we're all looking forward to getting this started."

The Jaguars return 11 players from last year's team which finished last season ranked No. 15 in the final NAIA poll.

"Really we just want to get started with the basics," said Lambeth as her team began stretching on Tuesday. "Our philosophy is that we just play the game that we love and it's going to be fun."

The team also went 2-2 at the NAIA Region VI tournament. This year the team welcomes in four new players, including Claire McGee, Tasha Rotramel, Izzy Glowney and Brittany Boren. The additions of the new players and a year of experience has the Jaguars feeling upbeat about starting the season.

"I expect us to pick up where we left off last year on the field," Ferguson said. "I really think we have a team that has the ability to make it to the national tournament."
