A search is underway for a new volleyball coach at Memorial.
Irma Gomez, who has been the head coach the previous two seasons, resigned from her position as head volleyball coach of the Lady Vipers.
"I think it's a good time to go in a different direction in the volleyball program," said Victoria school district athletic director Mickey Finley. "There's really no timetable set right now to hire a new coach, but we both felt it was a good decision to make a change."
Gomez remains as a teacher at Memorial and is the girls powerlifting coach this season.
"I'm going to explore my options after this year on whether I want to teach full time or seek other opportunities," Gomez said. "This year wasn't a lot of fun, and I think it's a good decision for both sides to make a change."
The resignation comes after an investigation into the program and Gomez's involvement in a club volleyball team. The University Interscholastic League and District 27-5A did not pass any penalties down to Memorial or Gomez.
"This has nothing to do with the UIL," Finley said.
Gomez went 41-34 in two seasons with the Lady Vipers and missed out on the playoffs both seasons. Memorial finished in a tie for fourth in District 27-5A both seasons, but lost the play-in games. The Lady Vipers completed this season with a 19-21 record and a loss to Converse Judson.
Finley said the search for a new coach has started and that Jennifer Saenz is heading up the off-season program until a replacement is selected.
"We are looking for a proven winner and someone who knows how to teach the game," Finley said.
"We are looking for someone to be a leader for the future of the program."
Finley said he is looking for a coach who will be able to help find another new volleyball coach when there are two high schools in Victoria. He said the transition that will come with two high schools has the current Memorial coaching staff in all sports uncertain, but that he sees it as a positive for the new volleyball coach and the coaches currently at VISD.
"It's a good atmosphere for the coaches around here right now," Finley said. "I think that with the new schools there are some questions in everyone's minds about what's going to happen. A lot of it will start happening quick and there is some uncertainty, but I think there is the opportunity for advancement for the people who are here."

vogel2, If not mistaken, wasn't Jayme Pauley on that team as well? It's unfortunate that she wouldn't allow herself to say something on a positive note about the previous coaching staff. But hey, this approach will make the new boss happy.
April 17, 2009 at 6:15 p.m.I played for Coach Gomez when I went to VHS/MHS. She was my JV coach. Coach Gomez was the best coach I EVER had. She led my JV team to a undefeated season, and the season before we only had 2 losses. She was leaps and bounds better than Kirst, yet drastically under appreciated. She pushed us in a healthy way, and every player that she had thrived under her command, and went south once promoted to Varsity. It angers me that parents have such awful things to say about someone that I truly feel produced some of MHS' best players. She believed in me when others did not.
April 17, 2009 at 5:40 p.m.How about naming a vball coach! Baseball gets a coach in 1 day and vball its been 2 -3 months. Next year's team is gonna be affected by the in decision(s) of the athletic dept. this year.
Can we have the names of the applicants at least?!?!?
March 30, 2009 at 6:56 a.m.i would have much rather had roland gonzales that went to ray and now at cy-springs in houston
January 16, 2009 at 12:48 p.m.roberttx: People thought Mr. Finley was a great coach when he was hired. What do you think the opinion is now? Remember, its all a matter of perspective sometimes.
January 16, 2009 at 12:02 p.m.just wanted get in before they lock this thread.
i hope they hire a great coach.
January 16, 2009 at 8:56 a.m.Purplerain you got alot of class talking about someones wife. She has nothing to do with this matter and you talk bad about her. Why are you hiding behind that username purplerain you must be alittle punk just like prince if you are going to talk trash about someones wife be a man and stop hiding behind that stupid username. In my book you are trash you are the type of person that is jealous of people that work hard and have a good job your life must suck so you get off by talking down on other people.
January 16, 2009 at 8:31 a.m.Irma I know you have learned to become desensitized to the attacks and personal attacks that you have received.
Just like a Duck's back, let the water bead (Personal attacks and Negative comments) and drop.
Keep on truckin and "Get ir done".
We pray for the ones who don't understand how team selections are done.
Apparently they don't know that the teams are put together by votes made by a group of coaches so just like the "COWBOYS", they blame the losses on the quarterback.
Suzy88-Well spoken!
We could spend time bashing each other and also Irma.
How about we say a prayer for Irma and her family?
January 15, 2009 at 11:07 p.m.May "He" watch over you wherever you go!

January 15, 2009 at 10:08 p.m.No doubt football is king in Texas, that is not a news flash. When you are athletic director you should support ALL sports. Also they can use the "king" part of that statement when they earn it!
Well maybe Coach Finley will get one of his daughters to coach volleyball or maybe his daughter in law Natisha Finley that is a reporter @ news center 25. She really sux at that job.
January 15, 2009 at 9:29 p.m.Unfortunately as parents we sometimes do not see reality, and always hate to be told anything other than "my kid" should be a Varsity starter. Although I do agree that children should be given ample opportunity to participate, High School Varsity athletics are a serious business, and not a place to just "participate". Right or wrong, agree or disagree, High School sports aren't our mom's and dad's high school athletics anymore. Those days are long gone. These coaches are looking to develop good, coached and trained talent, and expect these kids to basically come to high school prepared to compete and to be functional at a well above average level. Most athletes today come in as Freshman with specialized training and experience competing at the select levels being trained by well paid, highly trained professional club coaches. In many instances the professional trainers in these clubs and with these organizations have far more experience, knowledge and training than most high school coaches. This is true whether it be softball, soccer, baseball, basketball, golf and almost all sports now days. Most kids play one sport, not because they want to, but in order to be successful, they have to concentrate and train in one discipline. These parents pay big bucks and spend their entire weekends traveling, playing, and training in their respective sports. The coaches are now a product of the world of club sports. They become dependent on these clubs to send them high functioning players with all the skill sets already in place. These players be it softball, golf, baseball or whatever they choose, must come from the select clubs in order to have a chance in high school.
January 15, 2009 at 9:16 p.m.Victoria has to have these club programs in order to compete at the high school level. Irma Gomez was just being honest. She's not going to waste a kid's time. She is certainly not going to have a kid sit and flounder when they truly do not have a chance of ever making the Varsity or cracking the starting lineup. She has to create competition and the reality is that she does not have time to "develop" basic technical skill sets. If she does, then her program will lag behind and suffer. If you don't think or realize that the girls in the San Antonio districts, ones in which we must compete with, already come to High School playing at elite levels then you are sadly mistaken. Irma just stated bluntly and honestly what many of the coaches on the boys side already say. Could you imagine being a High School coach and having to develop inexperienced players with limited skill sets and no real competitive experience? That wouldn't be fair to the girls who show up playing at an extremely high level, or the girl that needs the extra fundamental skill training. The well trained player would suffer while waiting for these others to "develop". No amount of JV or Freshman games can get these girls ready for a tough Varsity District schedule. You must now show up in High School with the skill sets already in place and the coaches develop those abilities.
That's why Victoria Memorial has suffered for so long in Football and Baseball. In football the MHS teams typically don't have a ton of kids who work with private trainers as well as private QB coaches, specialty trainers, ie. private punting and kicking coaches, running back coaches, private strength trainers, etc. There are many reasons why, however money has alot to do with it and our demographics aren't favorable or conducive to allowing this to happen. It is what it is.
Not until recently did the boys really start playing select baseball either. Little League was the predominate force in Victoria, and now you see the after effects of the product that is showing up on the baseball diamond. For the last decade the rest of the state was developing strong baseball players with high paid trainers, hitting instructors, pitching instructors, etc. all the while Victoria was content with Little League and letting the dads do the best they could. Look what happened. Our baseball program, is going through a dismal time trying to compete with players at these other schools across the state who have been raised in select programs training with the best money could buy. All in all, Irma Gomez was a victim of the times, and Coach Finely is still very "Old School" and manages with an "Old School" mentality. No disrespect, just calling a duck a duck. It may be neither right or wrong, but coaches like Coach Gomez are going to have to deal with it or leave for better opportunity. I'm not saying coach Finely is wrong, it's common with old coaches who have been around for 20 or 30 years. They become sheltered in their own little world of High School athletics, and don't understand the world of private clubs and athletics outside of High School. They truly resist it, and hate to admit that these men and women know their business. Private sports and select training outside of High School is huge business. Many high school coaches used to argue that these private coaches weren't teaching the correct fundamentals, or questioned their credentials or teaching abilities. That may have been true years ago, but the tide has changed. It now seems to be exactly opposite. Typically you will find professional instructors that do only sport specific instruction with amazing credentials, and far more experience then your average high school coach.
Apparently Coach Gomez spoke the truth and hurt some feelings along the way. Sorry that she is leaving and I truly applaud her forward thinking and honesty with these players and their parents. She will certainly land on her feet and will have no problems finding a job. She is a good person and a good coach.
i have to agree with momof2 with her statements.I am a mother of a player and have spoken with many parents and players about this investigation and how the volleyball program was run. Many decisions made by Mrs.Gomez were very clear as to where her mind was at. Many of us could clearly see how her decisions were base on where the girls played during club season. Her choice of club was pushed on the girls and then she brought the girls down by making hurtful comments to them when the club of her choice was not chosen by the players. Many players were place on JV and Varisty not by there abilities and advancement compared to other players but by where they played club ball and by the parents who showed the coach who would be a best friend. many parents, coaches from middle schools, and club league coaches question her placement of these girls. When a coach makes a choice base on the players abilities you can have a state winning team. When the choice is based on friendship and where you play this is what you get.TROUBLE. I think that this is a good Good choice that was made and great timing. When a coach scouts out players and see the level that a player is at then you can have a great team giving memorial A state title. Clearly that did not happen many girls were move not according to abilities but for reason of pride on Mrs.Gomez. Many comments were made to the girls on the rival coach of a club league and therefore many of the girls did not get moved or played based on performance.I believe the viper volleyball program has a state winning team right now if the new coach and also the coaches still there will reevaluate the placement of the girls. We as parents and coaches mainly the middle school coaches can see that these girls who have played for them and know there abilities would see the mistakes that Mrs.Gomez made. A persons word speak tremendous but not to follow what you say can hurt a player. There is one player that we all know of that was lied to and strip from certian things due to Mrs.Gomez. She has the desire and through the help of players, coaches(middle school)and club coaches have help her keep the desire to play alive.Mrs Gomez hurt this player and brought her spirits down but didnt keep her down. Many were told not to try out cause they didnt have it and just to give up i could see that if these girls did not play with heart and desire but to discourage because which club league they played for. Many may want to comment on this but if you dont directly interact with the volleyball program and have a realationship with the players then it really doesnt matter only the ones within the program should comment.
January 15, 2009 at 8:54 p.m.I am with Wonderwoman on this. My daughter was one that was lined up as a freshman B team member and told not to even bother to try out.But as a parent, i just accepted that Coach Gomez felt that way. I did not go and complain that all the girls should have at least been able to work out during volleyball period in school, instead of sitting on the bleachers watching.Maybe I should have joined the other parents in complaining. I think there are more parents out here that were very unhappy and did not say anything. Maybe with the new schools, the coaches should have seen that more girls were definitly needed, and keep those around and work with them and encourage them. I did not see the great person that some of you seem to have seen. I saw someone who if you were not on that one particular club league, do not bother with her.
January 15, 2009 at 11:55 a.m.Here is an opinion/theory whatever. Coach Finley lacks professionalism and people leader skills. I believe anyone that has dealt with him personally will know what that means. What he does to compensate for his lack of people leader skills is to lead by intimidation. He doesnt want anyone to challenge or disagree with him. If you want to keep your job, you had better sit back and be quiet.
I understand that Coach Gomez stood up for what she believed was right on more than one occasion. Now we are seeing the results of where that approach takes you. The events of the summer league and the accusations made against her took their toll as well. Coach Gomez I honestly believe that you have made the right decision and will be better off. I know you are a great teacher in the classroom and in the gym.
What should bother tax payers in this district is the lack of an check and balance process. Coach Finley has the discretion to make any decision within the athletic department that he desires. The only person that he has to account to is the Superintendent. He can wake up Friday morning and decide that he doesnt like the basketball coach for whatever reason, and he has the authority to re-assign them. Simple as that. The sad part is that the Superintendent is apparently to busy to see that there is an issue with this process. I seriously question Mr. Moores ability to judge someones character after this. It makes me wonder what other bad decisions are being made within a vacuum??
January 15, 2009 at 11:18 a.m.Obviously SuperDad doesn't have a girl in volleyball, nor Suzy88--if you only knew the abuse some of these girls have been subjected to--Finley did the right thing--just sorry it took so long to realize--and the team that she had to work with was the team SHE picked--obviously not for talent.
January 15, 2009 at 11:12 a.m.Irma is a class act. Oh how soon we forget that she went undefeated for about 2 or 3 years with the MHS Junior Varsity. That's incredible. I think she was like 63-2 or something ridiculous like that. Please correct the record if you know.
She is a wonderful leader and very good Volleyball Coach. She knows the game. Good job Finley. She is an asset to VISD and a darn good teacher. Never played for her, but watched her, listened to her advice, and know the content of her character. Excellent coach. This is a terrible loss for the district.
Sorry VISD but you just lost an excellent Coach, wonderful teacher, and great leader of young women.
January 15, 2009 at 11:03 a.m.Ms.Gomez will be missed if she decides to leave V.I.S.D. as a parent of a young lady she coached , we feel shes a great coach. and most important she loves her girls!!!!she makes a positive lasting impact on their lives in so many ways.thats a real winner to me.
January 15, 2009 at 10:57 a.m.Finley will no doubt put "football" coaches to be in charge
of the program even though both sports play basically at the same time of the year.
Ms.Gomez I believe was railroaded~~particularly by parents. She will do good elsewhere and these so called nosayers better hope the "grass is greener". But, there must be alot of drama in volleyball....this district is stronger now with Judson and Wagner and to change the outcomes in the score it all starts in the summer and especially Jr High. Gomez did her best for what talent she has on the team. imo
January 15, 2009 at 9:21 a.m.Like Finley gives a crap about any girls sport! I only pray his ignorance does not get spread over both the new high schools as rumor has it.
