The Van Vleck Lady Leopards opened District 29-2A with 67-64 overtime victory over the Hitchcock Lady Bulldogs on Friday, Jan. 9, at Hitchcock. The Lady Bulldogs led at the half 24-22 but Van Vleck came back in the second half and tied the game at 52-52 at the end of regulation. “The girls really stayed calm on pressure situations and we had great fan support,” said Van Vleck Lady Leopard’s head coach Cheryl Williams. Andrea Floyd led Van Vleck in scoring with 27 points for her season high followed by Alisha Brown with 13 points and Desiree Griggs with 12 points. Jona Griffin led the team in rebounding with 12 followed by Griggs with 10. Sharkettes sink Lady Tigers The Palacios Sharkettes opened District 28-3A with a 63-40 victory over Goliad Lady Tigers on Friday, Jan. 9, at Goliad. Palacios led at the half 35-18 and out scored its opponent 28-22 in the second half for the win. Bethany Martino led the Sharkettes in scoring with 20 points and four 3-pointers followed by Christen Sandoval with 13 points. Clarissa Puentes had 10 points for Palacios. Sharkettes improved to 13-7 for the season. “Great win on the road in a very physical environment, we overcame some tough calls and kept working hard and had one of our best nights on the season,” said Palacios Sharkettes head coach Aaron Wollam. “We have now won 9 of our last 10, so I think we are starting to peak at the right time, got two tough opponents coming to town next week, should be some good games.” Ladycats fall to Ladybirds in District opener The El Campo Ladybirds dropped the Bay City Ladycats 53-43 in the District 23-4A opener for both teams on Friday, Jan. 9, at El Campo. El Campo led at the half 25-18. El Campo improved to 16-5 for the season and Bay City dropped to 14-8. Andel Brooks led El Campo in scoring with 17 points. The Ladycats were led in scoring by Devan Price with 13 points. Lady Cobras cage Tigerettes. The Industrial Lady Cobras opened District 29-2A with a lopsided 52-15 victory over the Tidehaven Tigerettes on Friday, Jan. 9, at Vanderbilt. Industrial led at the half 40-7 and out scored Tidehaven in the second half 12-8 for the win. Emily Tsika led the Tigerettes in scoring with seven points while Taylor Milberger led Industrial with 15 points. Lady Comanches edge Lady Hornets The Shiner Lady Comanches overcame a 29-28 first half deficit to edge the Louise Lady Hornets 51-49 in the District 28-1A opener for both teams on Friday, Jan. 9. Shiner improved to 6-13 for the season while Louise dropped to 14-8 for the season. Leisha Flowers led Shiner in scoring with 25 points wile Katie Brown led Louise with 15 points. Sharks win rivalry with Tidehaven The Palacios Sharkettes edged Tidehaven Tigers 46-44 on Friday, Jan. 9, at El Maton to avenge an earlier loss to the Tigers on Nov. 18, at Palacios. Palacios led at the half 25-22. James Murphy led the Sharks in scoring with 11 points followed by Reno Lee with nine points and Dustin Tedder and Bryant Lewis with eight points.
