The Tidehaven Tigerettes won their first game of the season by downing the Boling Lady Bulldogs 34-30 on Tuesday, Jan. 13, at El Maton. The win came at a perfect time for Tidehaven as the Tigerettes improved to 1-1 in District 29-2A. “We finally got the big elephant off our backs and won our first game of the season and my first game as coach,” said Tidehaven Tigerettes head coach John Matthys. “Shawnette Woods did a super job rebounding under the boards and has been a good addition to the team. Emily Tsika also had a good game. The girls played very well as a team.” Tidehaven had five players hit baskets in the first quarter as the Tigerettes outscored Boling 13-6 with baskets from Julianna Garay, Emily Tsika, Briana Cruz, Brittney Manciaz and Courtney Manciaz. Boling outscored Tidehaven in the second quarter 9-4 to narrow the gap at half time to 17-15. Cruz had the only basket in the second quarter for the Tigerettes and Tsika made two shots from the charity stripe. Woods picked up the offense for Tidehaven in the third quarter as she scored all of her seven points in the game and gave Tidehaven a 26-20 lead at the end of the quarter. She also hit the final basket of the third quarter at the buzzer. Cruz opened the fourth quarter with a layup to give Tidehaven an eight-point advantage, but the lead was short lived as Boling hit a three-pointer to narrow the Tigerettes’ lead to 28-23. With 5:42 left, Cruz hit another layup for a 30-23 Tidehaven advantage. The Lady Bulldogs rallied with a basket and a three-pointer with four minutes left in the game as Tidehaven held on to a slim 30-28 lead. Tsika answered back a minute later with a basket and Garay followed with a easy layup on a fast break for a 34-28 lead with 2:35 remaining in the contest. Tidehaven followed with ball control to run out the clock for the victory. Tsika and Cruz led the Tidehaven in scoring with eight points each followed by Woods with seven points. The Tigerettes’ next game will be at Hitchcock on Friday, Jan. 16, at 6:15.
