The Bay City Blackcats soccer team has its eye on the district crown as a new season begins in new District 46-4A. The Blackcats look to improve on last year’s third-place finish and first-round playoff loss to Friendswood. Luis Gomez is returning, after a year’s absence, as head coach of the team . Key players returning from last year’s team are senior defenders Jonathan Schneider and Juan Vargas, Gomez said. Others include goalie Mario Landeros, forwards Aaron Sanford and Stephen Painter, midfielders Raul Camargo, Steven Cortez and Jimmy Nguyen. “We have a hard working group of kids who love the game and are very dedicated to getting better,” said Gomez. “I think we will compete in every game and have a good chance at winning district.” A weakness for the team is its varsity inexperience, Gomez said. District teams are Angleton, Brazosport, El Campo, Palacios and Columbia. The team to beat for the district title is Angleton. The Blackcats senior team members are Schneider, Vargas, Nguyen, Jose Gonzales, Ramiro Garcia, Tyler Wacker, Carmelo Flores, Blake Sparks, Aaron Stafford, Carlos Hidalgo and Jose Jimenes. Other players on the team are Landeros, Sandord, Painter, Camargo, Steven Cortez, Rey Lopez, Michael McConaha, Eric Cortez, Rembran Garcia, Edwin Estrada, Nick McConaha and Gerardo Mendoza. Bay City will open at home at 7 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 16, against Northbrook.
