It can be stolen, won, given away and broken. It can be wounded and healed. It can keep you alive or ultimately kill you.

It's the human heart and for centuries, it has fascinated creative types, from writers to musicians to artists. With February being National Heart Month, Citizens Medical Center is celebrating the human heart both as an organ and as a creative muse with an art contest and exhibit.

"We're calling it 'An Affair of the HeART' and asking local artists to submit works of art that are inspired by the human heart," James Clifton, HealthWISE coordinator, said. "We decided to do this to create awareness of the heart during February and to give local artist an opportunity to show off their work."

The hospital has teamed up with the Cultural Council of Victoria and the Victoria Art League for the juried art show. Artwork that has been donated by the artists will be sold via silent auction, and all proceeds will go toward free public health screenings at Citizens, Clifton said. Clifton added that there are three categories to submit entries, which are 2-D and 3-D artwork, floral arrangements and a graphic art poster category.

There is no entry fee and artists can make two entries per category. The deadline to submit entries is Jan. 30 and judging will be on Feb. 7.

The "Affair of the HeART" reception will be from 6 to 9 p.m. on Feb. 14 at the Museum of the Coastal Bend, and show winners will be announced. From Feb. 16 to 27, the public exhibit will hang in the lobby of Citizens Medical Center.
