WOODSBORO - Refugio County will benefit from more diverse job options, including work at Exelon's proposed nuclear plant, said Stanley Tuttle, the county commissioner of Precinct 2.

Ranging reporter, Madeline Lewis, spoke with Tuttle about this and other issued related to the Refugio County Commissioners Court Thursday morning at Tuttle's Grocery & Market in Woodsboro.

Q: What is your major focus as the commissioner of Precinct 2 for Refugio County?

A: "I guess probably taking care of the needs of my constituents in Precinct 2 and overseeing the county budget."

Q: What are those needs?

A: "My main focus since I've been in office, which is two years now, we've done lots of road work, rebuilding and resurfacing, lots of drainage work. Not only in the precinct, but also road work with the interlocal agreement we have with the town of Woodsboro."

Q: What concerns you most in your job?

A: "What concerns me the most is our little community really doesn't have any industry. We have to depend on oil and gas. Our little community is an oil and gas and farming community. As we're sitting right now, with the oil and gas and farming industry the way they are, I think we've got our work cut out for us next year."

Q: Do you see cuts in the budget this year?

A: "One thing we had to do last year - we didn't want to, but we had to - the cost of materials went up so we all had to increase our budgets to take care of all of that. Hopefully, with the way things are right now with fuel being probably half what it was last year when we did our budgets we can all tighten our belts a little bit for next year to help our constituents, our county taxpayers."

Q: So you think cuts won't be necessary because expenses will go down?

A: I hope so. One thing that will help is our community development foundation, our county judge and a couple of our commissioners have been working real hard to attract new business to our county. We just got a big break a couple months ago with this welding fabrication company that opened up a few months ago. And our community development is working real close with Victoria economic development on the Exelon nuclear plant they are trying to develop. Hopefully, if all this goes through we can provide some good jobs for our residents and make things here a lot more diverse, other than just relying on oil and farming.
